My computer won't boot from an external HDD. When it tries, it cannot find the drive, I have formated my HDD to NTFS and I have tried both an .iso file and extracted it. I have set the priority for the external HDD, but its still not reading it.

Solution

How did you set up your ext HDD? Recommend Yumi USB. You need your 8.1 ISO, save it to Desktop for convenience.

Scroll down to 'Download YUMI'
Insert your Pendrive and note it's Drive Letter (Important!)
Run the software once downloaded
Select the correct Drive Letter
Scroll down the list of Distros to 'Windows Vista/7/8
Browse to the location of your ISO (Desktop)
It should look something like this...

Hit ‘Create’ to finish the procedure.
If the drive still can't be 'seen' try disabling Secure Boot and enabling CSM in BIOS/UEFI

Solution
Also, once you manage to Install, when you get to the 'Where do you want to Install Windows' Screen, delete any partitions using 'Drive Options (Advanced)' so you install to Unallocated Space. That way Setup creates the necessary partitions inc. System Reserved (350Mb)
