Giving thoughts to building my next computer and this is my first go at it. Looking for opinions on the following components that I am thinking of using.
Case, Lian Li PC 2130B

Motherboard, AS Rock X 99 WSE

CPU, Intel core i7 5930k

Memory, G Skill Rip Jaws 4 Series

Hard drives, Crucial BX100
Toshibia PH3200U
HGST Deskstar NAS

Cooling, CPU Zalman CNP 514X
Fans, Cougars V14HP, CFD and V12H

DVD/CD burner, Sony Optica Arc

VGA DNY Quadro K220

Video Sapphire Nitro Radeon R9

Audio Interface, HT Omega Fexix 7.1

USB Card, High Point Rocket U

Power Supply, EVGA 220 T2

Possible Fan Control BIT Fenix BFA

The primary use's for this computer will be both video and audio editing. Yes I know what I have listed will cost a lot but I want to build a unit that will provide years of service only with upgrades. I am looking for suggestions and ideas in case I am going way overboard. My plan at this point is to buy the components over perhaps the next year before I assemble it

scottmsr62,

The proposed system listed has many excellent choices and the performance would be very good.

I would propose a somewhat more workstation-oriented approach, using a Xeon E5-1650 v3 (6-core at 3.5/ 3/8GHz)ECC RAM, and if possible a Quadro M4000 (8GB) -which will be avaialbe 3 October 2015 fro a but under $900, or a Quadro K4200 (4GB).

However, another approach that has the best possible cost / performance ratio is to buy a recent high-end workstation and upgrade it. How about:

HP z640 (2) Intel Xeon E5-2643V3 3.4GHz 32GB 512SSD 500HDD NVS 510 No OS > Sold for $2,300

http://www.ebay.com/itm/HP-z640-2-Intel-Xeon-E5-2643V3-3-4GHz-32GB-512SSD-500HDD-NVS-510-No-OS-/271963182064?hash=item3f5244d3f0&nma=true&si=l8iI%252BvMEs8zuQLTs66TjX0tfAAs%253D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2557

And there you have two E5-2643 v3 6-core @ 3.4 /3.7GHz (=$3,100), 32GB of RAM, 512GB SSD /500GB HD.

Of course, the 12 cores /24 threads would only be fully emplyoed by software that is multithreaded such as Premiere. The Quadro NVS 510 is strictly 2D, but would edit 2D very effectively. On Passmark, an NVS 510 delivers a 2D score of up to 1066 and 3D of 831- actually not too bad.

Dpending on your perf0rmance needs, tere are of course, other Dell Precision and HP z-series. You could also buy a barebones or low specification Precision T7610 which uses the E5 v2 CPU's:

DELL PRECISION T7610 Barebone Workstation ! Build your own System !! > Sold for $750

http://www.ebay.com/itm/DELL-PRECISION-T7610-Barebone-Workstation-Build-your-own-System-/321567999837?hash=item4adef2475d

> and add a single E5-2687w v2- possibly the best Xeon ever- 8-core @ 3.4 /4.0 plus a Quadro M4000 and so on, then later add a 2nd CPU.

Another approach to building is to build based on a Supermicro Superworkstation. As this provides a case, motherboard, and power supply, it's possible to quickly plug in the CPU's, RAM, GPU, and drives. In this way, you could even start with a used single CPU and lower specification GPU and later change without ever taking it out of use for more than a hour or so at time:

This kind of system may also be done using fully depreciated LGA1366 CPU's:

That's 12 cores / 24 threads at 3.47 /3.73GHz , 96GB or RAM, and a very fast disk system at a reasonable cost because the $3,200 of processors only cost $500-600.

But this could be started and put into use quickly with 16GB RAM, no RAID controller and a used GPU. them sell the current system and improve it -GPU, second CPU, more RAM, etc.while continuing to work.

Depending on performance expectations, it might be possible to derive a quite high speciifcation at a low cost:

HP Z420 Workstation E5-1650 v2 3.5GHz 8GB RAM 500GB HDD K600 Win7 Pro G3E87US > Sold for $1,200

http://www.ebay.com/itm/HP-Z420-Workstation-E5-1650-v2-3-5GHz-8GB-RAM-500GB-HDD-K600-Win7-Pro-G3E87US-/301696156440?hash=item463e7e0318

> As that system has 6-cores @ 3.5 / 3.9GHz, it would then need a GPU e,g, Quadro K4200 and Disks- e.g. Samsung 850 EVO /WD Black 2TB to complete and again could be in use very quickly.

My idea is to find ways to reduce the number of decisions and time to have a usable system that can continue to improve.

So, a couple of alternatives.

Cheers,

BambiBoom
