So, a few weeks ago I built a gaming PC using all new parts, but all of a sudden I am hearing a crackling sound coming from the back. It's loudest on startup, but never seems to go away and is driving me crazy. I've never noticed it before, but when I was installing a game, it became incredibly loud and worrying. Any ideas? Because I don't think it's ever done this before.

Right, here's an update. So I was pretty sure it's coming from the power supply or the HDD, and then when I turned it on, I noticed every time the noise appeared, as did a little orange led inside the blue on the power button. I mean that usually it glows blue when on, but when the noise strikes is flickers orange. Any ideas?

You can't, therefore I did it for you.

A power cable shouldn't make noise; if it does, then you should replace it (you can use another cable to make sure). If it isn't the power cable, best would be to remove the PSU from the case; it will then be easier to identify if its the source of the issue. What PSU do you have?

Sorry to bring this back up, but I fitted in the new PSU, a really good quality, tier 1 one, but when I turned it on, the noise still occurred!!!! I think it's coming from the front fan, but I can't get to the front panel to confirm that. My other theory is the HDD, as it seems to be coming from the front, but that is secured in place and the wires are tightly in. Is it worth running without the HDD, or is that risky? Shall I hire someone to take a look?

Would that make a crackling noise like static though? And if you know anything about the CiT spectre case then please inform me on how to remove the front panel, because their is no manual online or with the case, and even though I've removed both side panels and have tugged on it hard, the front panel will not come off.

I disconnected the front fan, and it did make a noise. Disconnected the HDD and it didn't make the noise. It must be this. Will try and connect it outside of the case, but that's not a permenant solution. Will try a different SATA port, but any other ideas?

tried a different SATA cable, and a different SATA port, and it still made the noise. This leads me to the conclusion that it is either the power connecter (very unlikely), or the HDD. Any ideas? Does anyone agree?

Yep, 100% certain that it's the HDD. I will have to RMA it, meaning I'll have to reinstall my Nvidia drivers and my Windows 10, and all my games. Will back up what I can, but can I use the same Windows 10 disk twice?

Some drives like the WD Black make noise when they are accessed, but it isn't a crackling noise; it's a normal noise that definitely isn't unpleasant nor worrisome. None of the Seagate drives that I've owned make access noises that can be heard when in a case (except for 15K SAS drives). The noise may be normal, but it depends on the model that you bought.

I've decided to learn to live with it, but as it is not caused by vibrations or anything else, I have decided to try and dampen the sound, so has anyone ever done this before? If so, any advice? It is mostly silent while running so its ok now.
