I keep on getting the same information from Dell techs that my brand new Dell (Purchased November 27th 2014) can't support an upgraded PSU higher than 350w.

The video card I want to install is a GeForce GTX 750 Ti and the specific model is the Dell Inspiron 3847 Core i5 12G RAM, 1TB HD.

How can I get this video card working with this computer?

Solution
You don't need a psu upgrade. That card runs off the pci express bus alone. An i5 doesn't use much power. Those 2 parts make up the vast majority of your power use. A 300w or 350w psu should be plenty(maybe even 250w or 200w).

All Geforce gtx 750 Ti cards say they need a 400w minimum to run. Aren't I putting my computer at risk or at the very least shortening its lifespan or stabilty by using a PSU that is below manufacturer specs?

The gpu may get close to its stated tdp at times, but the cpu won't. The suggested psu wattage takes into account both lesser quality units(which may only deliver a fraction of their stated wattage) and rigs with lots of hard drives. Your new dell should have a decent(if not great) psu and only one hdd. You'll be fine.

this maybe what there really trying to say with out blaming themselves

some models of store bought computers [dell.hp,acer,ect..] may come with a ''locked or fixed'' bios and may not allow you to change certain hardware as a video card.. this is done to protect them from undue warranty claims and refunds .this is not done to hurt you but to protect them. you really need to see if that upgrade has been proven to work in your model first before you invest money in it .. there are a lot of these threads here at toms to look at some models will allow upgrades and some dont.. and a lot of guys here say ya ya ya when is really no no no...it would be sad you spent $200 on a card that wount post after you installed it as most find out. then get told its your psu and you spend more and end up right back where you are now, but its up to you good luck..

you got to know the the boards in these computers are not like the ones we use to do custom builds witch are open to upgrading with in the boards compatibly . the bios is custom made for there design and just for the parts they authorize to be used on there computers there only guaranteed to work as is out of the box as you bought it ,..

they don't care about you upgrading they sell computers -- if it works out fine then its good if not then you know better next time .. right??

You must realize that I spent awhile in chats with both Dell and NVIDIA before making my purchase. The only thing stopping me from using this video card is my wimpy 300w PSU.

After a long enough chat with Dell Tech Support, they finally admitted that you cannot upgrade the PSU to higher than 350w without voiding the warranty. It could actually be done, but they couldn't say anything about it.

However, since I don't care about that, I upgraded to a 500w PSU without any difficulties and soon after installed my GeForce GTX 750 Ti. Everything works perfectly!

I have installed this card into my inspiron 3847 and i have also never turned on the pc with the stock PSU installed i bought a 400watt PSU from besty buy as well as the 750 TI sc w/ ACX2.0 and my 250GB samsung 840 EvO ssd and i have excellent performance \ill post my dxdiag

Dell is lying. I used to have the 3487 before I exchanged it for the xps 8700. I changed to the power supplies and added a dual fan gtx 750 in both machines. The fit is a little tight but it works.
