[SOLVED] New Desktop For Game Dev And Gaming, Need Advice.

Hi, I'm currently thinking about building a workstation/gaming rig in the coming months, as I'm starting to take on more jobs for 3D modeling and game art/dev, and will be going to university in a few months to pursue a degree in a similar field so having a PC capable of handling the sort of power that a game engine or an intensive 3D software requires would be very helpful. While my current setup is good for most games and 3D applications, the hang ups are apparent in situations where time = money and a render, graphical bake, or similar common action begins to lag behind more capable builds. I also play a lot of games, and while my current PC purchased in 2017 is capable of running good frame rates at 1080p, using a GTX1070, I7-7700k, and 16gb RAM, it's unfortunately difficult to upgrade as it's a prebuilt Alienware Aurora, which is quite compact and due to some of the parts, makes simply upgrading the PC a little impractical. I'm interested in getting a new build to hopefully futureproof and allow myself to simply switch out parts when an upgrade is desired. Utilizing new graphics technology and upgrading my monitor to play at higher resolutions would be great as well.

Another reason I came to the forum is to seek build advice during recent part shortages and other hiccups. I don't keep up with the part market much, so I'm not as knowledgeable on when to buy or hold back. I wouldn't want to wait too long and miss out on a card that sells out, or buy too early and end up buying something when I could have waited to get something with more value for it's cost, for example : ).

I appreciate any advice on where to go from here.

Approximate Purchase Date: I was thinking about compiling parts throughout 2021, maybe building in summer-fall of this year. It's not urgent that I upgrade asap.

Budget Range: Approximately $2000 (USD) or less, not enthusiastic about going over, but the budget is a little flexible.

System Usage from Most to Least Important: Gaming, 3D art and general game dev. I almost never watch movies or stream on my desktop.

Parts Not Required:
I do not need to purchase a mouse, keyboard, and although I would like to upgrade my 1080p 144hz monitor, I can always wait : )

Preferred Website(s) for Parts: I have used Newegg in the past for some parts, it's not mandatory that they come from there though.

Country: United States (West Coast)

Parts Preferences: I'm most familiar with Nvidia and Intel parts.

Overclocking: Not planning to.

SLI or Crossfire: Not planning to.

Monitor Resolution: 1440p, or whatever would best suit beefier parts.

Additional Comments: Super flashy lights and decorations aren't really required, a relatively quiet PC would be nice if possible (my fans can really rev up when working currently) : D

few things to consider:

- I believe Intel cpus are currently the better Budget options, while AMD offer the better performance (Especially in the workstation area). Intel seems to be better available due to lower demand. Your Mileage might vary in your country.

- Some working programs actually do not use the graphics card much at all (Autodesk Inventor,im looking at you :D ). As for the Game Development, it really depends on what kind of game your are developing and what requirements it has to the computer. Consider if you want to switch that over now or if the 1070 still does it. It's a bit unfortunate but have a look at the GPU market right now.

- For such tasks I would highly recommend at least 32 GB of ram

- Does your computer already have an M.2 Drive? If not, I highly recommend getting one.

- Keep in mind that cpus newer than the mainboard are often not supported by default due to an older bios version. This needs to be checked carefully except you apear to know someone with a fitting cpu of the correct generation in order to update the BIOS first. In higher priceranges, motherboards with usb flash option (CPU-less) are available as far as I know (I never had the luck to have such a board and often would have needed it)
