New folks & JTL

I've been playing fantasy based MMORPGs for a few years and am looking
for something new. I was a big fan of the X-Wing & Tie Fighter games
way back when. JTL sounds intriguing to me. Some MMO. Build/improve
your own fighters. Choose between PvE and PvP.

But here are my concerns/questions:

* Can a player brand new to the SWG universe stick primarily to the
JtL expansion? I'm hearing conflicting information about how ships are
expensive so I'm unsure whether I would be able to afford one without
an established character. Or maybe it's possible to claw your way up?

* Related to the above point, I hear this is one of those games with
item attrition. I haven't been able to figure out whether this applies
to PvE or PvP only. I occasionally see something about freespace with
this topic, but don't understand what that has to do with anything.
Anyway my concern is being able to afford repairs etc as a new player
to the game.

* How well you can solo in this game? A lot of conversations go off
on some tangent about Sony or the ground game of SWG. I'm just
interested in solo play AND JtL. While I'd love to be in some type of
squadron using TeamSpeak, there are times that I just like to log in
and play solo. Or am I going to need a second account for some
function? e.g. shipwrites

You do get a free ship to start, not very good. However as you progress
you will need to buy ships and weapons, Howerver you do loot weapons and
credits

If you die in space your ship will need repairs and the items will loose
condition every time

The space missions are in tiers 1-4 plus master. Missions from 1-2 are
able to be done solo. However you will need to group for any tier above
that

I have been playing the ground game since the release and have started a lot
of new characters just for the fun of it, and IMO it's easier to start a JtL
character than a ground game character. You are given an upgradable ship
which you can use through the first tier of the skill tree (SWG skills are
arranged as 4 levels or tiers of 4 branches each, plus a novice level to
start and a master level to finish each skill tree). Each time you go out
you will loot equipment and credits. You keep the better equipment to
upgrade your ship and sell the other equipment back to an NPC chassis vendor
for 1000 credits per "reverse engineering" level, an equipment stat that
varies from 1 for noob parts to somewhere around 10 or so I think. The only
limitation to the starter ship is it has no hyperspace capability. So at
tier 2 you will have to buy a ship chassis with hyperspace capability. But
by then you should have plenty of cash and you can strip the parts off of
your old ship to equip the new one. Noob ship chassis can be bought for as
little as 10k credits. You can easily make that much in one mission at that
level just by selling the loot parts that you don't need.

Not sure about solo. At low levels definitely, but none of my toons are
master pilots yet, so I don't know how hard it gets. Some of my guild mates
are masters and don't seem to have any trouble doing solo missions. YMMV.

For sure you are going to want a flightstick with a throttle slider. You
can fly without it but I have yet to meet anyone who has had much success
without one. Keyboard and mouse does not give you precise enough speed
control and gamepads or even joypads don't have the accuracy you will need.

Yes. Looting pays well in the game. You may not have as much money as
you want, but you can certainly earn a living by being a pilot. Even
when ships were very expensive, I could create a new character and buy a
new ship in a few days.

Item attrition is not a concern for new players. You won't be using your
equipment for that long. As you advance in level, you will acquire
better equipment. You will sell off your old stuff to the component buyer.

I soloed Imperial Inquisition.

Soloing depends on your squadron and your obstinance. You can easily
solo most routine missions (escort, destroy, capture, etc). The tougher
missions, those needed to advance you through Tier3 and Tier4, are the
ones that will push you to the wall. All squadrons can be soloed, but
some are much much harder than others.

Yes it is possible - but it would be a good idea to get some
groundling skills. Some mission givers are in remote locations
on more dangerous planets. Ships are also bought on the ground
and dangerous creatures can be found sometimes close to vendors.

It should be PvE only.

> * How well you can solo in this game?

Depends on your faction. Imperial mission are IMHO are the hardest
followed by Rebel , Smuggler , Corsec , RSF missions in that order.
I suggest playing Corsec if you want to solo - because the neutrals
have the best ship selection - and they are able to attack both
imperials & rebels. Dunelizards are pretty cheap and can be used
all the way to master level. I suggest shooting Tie 3 Tie-Fighters
with your starter ship in the Yavin System to get enough money to buy
a Dunelizard.

Ditto on the Dunelizard. It's a tier-1 ship, but it is reasonably agile and
can pack 2 guns plus missiles and countermeasures. I recommend an ion
cannon for hammering down shields, and a blaster for general damage-doing.
Another mix (I haven't tried it) is an ion cannon and a disruptor, which is
weaker against shields but more damaging to armor. When fitting out a ship,
don't forget to load a capacitor, as your guns don't work without it.
