Approximate Purchase Date: this week

Budget Range: $700-$800 Before or after Rebates doesn't matter.

System Usage from Most to Least Important: Gaming mostly. SC2, LoL, HoN, Skyrim when it releases. SC2 and Skyrim are the most important. Oh, and DotA 2, whenever that happens.

Parts Not Required: Monitor, keyboard, mouse, OS, HD (see below)

Preferred Website(s) for Parts: newegg preferred, but flexible.

Country of Origin: United States

Parts Preferences: AMD. Nvidia.

Overclocking: Maybe - Never done it before, but am interested if the performance boost is worth it.

SLI or Crossfire: Yes - eventually. Not something I want to do now, due to budget constraints. However, I would like to double up down the road.

Monitor Resolution: 1600x1200 or 1920x1200)

Additional Comments: Quiet is good. This rig will be in our office where my wife works all day and doesn't want to "hear all that noise!"

I have already purchased:
Kingston SSDNow V+100 KR-S1296-3H 2.5" 96GB SATA II MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) for the main HD. I saw it on sale a couple days ago for $90 after MIR, and I had to pull the trigger. I have another 500gb HD that I will harvest from my old box. That will be used just for storage.

So basically, I'm looking for Mobo, CPU, Memory, PSU, and GPU. If I can overclock easily on the mobo, then I'd need an aftermarket heatsink & fan for my CPU, I think.

Here's the basics that I've been looking at so far:

AMD Phenom II X4 965 Black Edition Deneb 3.4GHz $129.99

GIGABYTE GA-990XA-UD3 $139.99 (When I SLI, this thing with x8/x8 channel, right? - Also, I've read in the comments that people have been having problems fitting in aftermarket CPU fans due to the memory crowding. Not too excited about that.

Really open on the video cards. I've read a few of the toms articles, but I don't really understand it all. The last time I researched and bought a GPU, memory size was all the rage. Help me out, here! Maybe this card?
MSI N550GTX-Ti Cyclone OC GeForce GTX 550 Ti (Fermi) $144.99 and $129.99 after MIR.

Really open on cases too. Obviously, I'm looking for something that will keep things quiet. I'm not into the LEDs, and would probably try to turn them off. Airflow + quiet. Also, I really like the bottom mounted PSUs, but that's not really a dealbreaker. I know the Rosewill CHALLENGER case for $49.99 won the toms choice award in 2010, but is there something better out there for me? I like the size of the Full Tower cases, but some Mid-Towers are pretty big as well. I don't know.

As far as PSUs go. I was looking at this Antec High Current Gamer Series HCG-750 750W because that seems like enough power and after the MIR it's only $69.99. Of course, that's until the end of today (sunday). So, other options seem like a better way to go. I'm not sure about the rails and such on PSUs. And if/when I SLI down the road it would be good to not have to get a new PSU.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...at_Power_Supplies-_-Best_Sellers-_-17-371-049 $69.99 after MIR.

For Memory, I don't know what the hell is going on with all the channels and whatever the timing 9-9-9-24 latency means. I'm at a loss. But I was looking at CORSAIR Vengeance 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 ($60.99) to start off with. 8GB seems like a solid start and I could always double up later depending on the mobo.

So, that brings me to $580.94 before shipping. Couple that with the SSD I purchased and I'm in the sweet spot as far as my budget goes. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Hopefully, I listed all the info you need in a way that's not annoying. Thanks in advance.

OPTICAL: Some $20 one

$869 before promo and rebate. I don't know if you're able to catch the NZXT case rebate so I will look for some alternative cases.

You don't need to go with a AMD Phenom II x4 965 since both 955 and 965 are black edition processors. You'll save quite a bit if you just bump up the multiplier a little bit yourself. Gigabyte doesn't have the best bios.. they're outdated and can be confusing. The case is pretty much open for changes, I don't know what'll fit your taste..

Some other cases I found:
LIAN LI Lancool First Knight Series PC-K59W $70

LIAN LI Lancool PC-K7B $90
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811112154

You should also look at Cooler Master Elite series. :p

Well, for midrange gaming without knowing your resolution I would choose either the HD 6850 or GTX 460. Their both around $150 and better than the 550Ti.
For a couple of bucks more you could get the 990FX ud3 mobo and have 16X/16X for crossfire/SLI.

I wouldn't recommend a full tower unless you really need the space, and it doesn't sound like you will. There are a lot of great cases in the $80-$100 range that I could easily recommend. At $50 it gets a lot harder. So what's really important to you? Keep in mind that alot of this will come down to aesthetics and personal taste. Are you interested in a window? Its a gaming machine so adequate cooling is important.
Go ahead with the HCG from Antec. Its a great deal. Likewise tyhe corsair vengeance but keep in mind the very high heatsinks on those. with 8 gigs you won't have a problem with most big tower coolers, but if you want to populate those two inner channels thats a different story-with just about any motherboard.

"So what you need to remember here is that everything used was reference, the motherboard, the cooler, the processor. What you are looking at here is easy to do. We guarantee you, you can take it further as well, a small MP increase based on this cooling was doable and sure... that baseclock frequency would work at 110 MHz very likely as well. I would not be surprised to see 4500~5000 MHz with proper cooling applied and more advanced motherboards."
Now to say to that, don't expect 4.5ghz, it all depends on the grade of the chip. Most can reach 4ghz but some can't go past that.

Would it be better to SLI with two lesser cards than to get the 560 ti you listed? Reading the toms articles about SLI made me think that might be the case.

I was thinking of sticking with AMD instead of going to the i5. Why? Not really sure. Budget and some sort of desire to not do what everyone else is doing (ie i5 2500k). Also, because I was a busy bee yesterday I missed the Antec 750w power supply. Any other recommendations? How powerful of a supply should I be looking at as a baseline?

Thanks for the reply. What cases would you recommend in the $80 - $100 range? I don't really care about a side window or anything. The priorities with the case are #1 keeping things cool and #2 keeping things quiet.

The 990FX ud3 mobo looks awesome, but difficult to overclock. I wasn't planning to overclock right out of the gate mainly because I've never done it before. Is that something I should consider down the road? Some of the reviews mention that the BIOS is icky.

Oh, and I was away from my computer yesterday and unable to order the Antec PSU. Any other recommendations on PSUs?

Thanks again.

If everyone's doing it, then there's usually a good reason why.

Yea. Eep eep - the benchmarks on the i5 2500k (especially when gaming) is ridiculous compared the the AMD situation. Arg.

Thanks for the tips on the GPUs. Would you recommend the gtx 560 instead of something like 2 SLI 450s (or some other SLI combo)?

Thanks! Really appreciate all of your help.

So, I'm looking at:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814133380

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814127565

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814121425

As some options. What should I be looking at. Core clock speed? the PNY looks pretty strong, but the last GPU I purchased was a 9800, so I'm way behind.

You've won me over on the i5, and getting a strong card now and then SLIing later seems smart. This will still all be good to go with the Antec 750 PSU or would Rosewill Xtreme Series RX750-S-B 750W Continuous @40°C be better.

Also, looking at this CoolerMaster Case. Seems like it would suit my needs and leave me some room budget-wise. (I just went back and read your original after adding this case section. I apologize. You win.... This is the case you recommended originally. Thanks! I think I'm golden!)
