New GPU, no display. Motherboard too old??

I have my dad's old custom built desktop. Has an ATI Radeon x1950 Pro. Tried installing a MSI GTX 1050 TI dual fan gpu.

I uninstalled the Radeon drivers with DDU in safe mode. I installed the new GPU and hooked it up to my tv via HDMI. All it did was display a black screen. It's like it knew it was there but it wasn't displaying an image. My desktop booted normally I think. It made a post beep but there was no display. .

Also, I ordered a DVI-D cable but was sent a HDMI to DVI-D instead. I tried that with my monitor but it didn't work. Didn't even recognize the GPU. Not sure if that type of cord even works.

My on board video port is disabled. I tried enabling the integrated graphics in the bios and it still didn't work. When I installed the new gpu I made sure it was set in the bios for PCI-E. Maybe my motherboard is too old. I don't know. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

With some mobos a separate GPU will disable the onboard video ports

You may need a better PSU. 350 w maybe a bit low.

That MSI card does it need power?? Because if the PSU doesnt have the cables, it wont do anything until you connect power to it from the PSU

I tried to boot without the GPU in and my monitor hooked up to the on board video but it didn't work. Tried setting integrated graphics to default in the bios then booting again and still nothing. Port has a sticker that says disabled.

MSI site says card requires a 300 watt psu. Only uses 75 watt. Doesn't need additional power. My PSU does have a 6 pin connector which I use on the ATI Radeon.

Later on I'm going to try removing some ram. And if that doesn't work I'll try with a different tv. Those are both solutions that have worked for others. I hope my card isn't a dud. I could try it in my dad's desktop but I don't really want to mess with his.

so you removed the gpu and is not booting again?

reset bios, rmove battery and then put that new gpu again

be sure to remove and reseat the ram, also a good dust clean could help

check that in bios any mention of onboard video card is disabled

I tried it again. I uninstalled drivers with ddu. shut down. took out battery, ram, old gpu. waited. put battery back, installed 1gb of ram, and installed new gpu. started up and then it beeped. never usually beeps. just one short beep. then my tv turned black and in the corner it said 640 x 480. computer is running fine. fans going. sound like hdd are spinning. but no image. I never did reset the bios settings to default. it doesn't do that when you take the battery out? And I did try looking for any mention of onboard graphics. nothing really but integrated graphics option. I think onboard will only work if there is a cpu installed with integrated graphics.

i didn't saw that your psu is only 350watts, surely a no brand psu, so it doesn't have enough power to make that new card work perhaps?

the ram, 3 gbs, 3 ram modules or 1 gb and 2gb modules?

Oh yeah, it will definitely go back to the way it was. I've done it before.

Yeah I don't know the brand. But the MSI site says the card only need a 300 watt PSU. The card doesn't need any additional power.

The ram is two 1GB modules and two 512mb modules. It works fine with the old GPU.

Older motherboards often need a BIOS update to support newer GPUs, sorry to say, but i doubt that your moherboard will support this GPU.

i would remove the 2 512 modules, permanently, time to put at least 2 2gb ram modules, at least 1 to have 4 gbs of ram, is it ddr1 or ddr2?

about older mainboard and new video cards, sometimes yes, you need a bios update, won't do harm

but not working at all? not sure if that could happen if previously there was working that x1950 in it

pci express in that pc should be 1 or 2, so this card at pci express 3 should be backwards compatible with it, bios is what is left to be upgraded

A x1950 is a really old card, that's why it works when you put it in, when that motherboard was made, there weren't any pci-e 3.0 cards, it's backwards compatible, but most of the time you need a BIOS update for the motherboard.

I have updated the bios. Sadly, the last update was in 2009 i think. Maybe 2012. I can't remember but it's old.. I guess its time for a new pc 🙁 I just really hope I don't go through all the trouble of getting a new setup and the card turns out to be a DOA from the start.

i was thinking that, have you tested the card on another pc?

the bious update is just to discar any possible memory error or compatibility list for the mainboard, it is worth to try it and could give you a good surprise

No and my dad wont let me test it in his desktop.. So I guess I should just return it and start working on getting a new motherboard and all that good stuff first.

if there is not another pc to test the gpu and you can't try it on a friends pc perhaps, it is the wisest choice, sorry we couldn't help more :/

Nope, kind of a loner lol. Yeah, best to just return it while I still can and start saving for a new set up. Thank you for all the help guys!
