I recently bought a 3060ti, for this example i will use fortnite ( i dont play it), I have a ryzen 5 3500x. When playing i get 170fps on low settings (1080p) and 40% gpu usage and dont know why...
I watched a benchmark on youtube and on 1440p the same settings and hardware his performance was almost 100 fps more. Can anyone help me with this???

because the utilization always depends on how much the game could utilize your hardware. Benchmark on youtube is kinda hit and miss, sometime it is a true one, some times it is not. My advice is to not mind about that since many test bed got different specs.

Some might have the same exact settings at yours but faster ram say like 3600, then it might perform better due to how Ryzen works, and Zen2 loves fast ram since it'll lower ccx to ccx latency.

It's better to list your full pc specs here.

Ryzen 5 3500x
3060ti Fe
B450 Gaming plus max
16gb 3200mhz corsair

the thing was that my 980ti i previously had performed the same if not better in my pc which makes 0 sense

try to follow this step by step in order (read till end):
  • Disconnect from internet
  • Uninstall every gpu driver using DDU (clean and do not restart, also tick all option in NVIDIA option in the ddu settings).
  • Uninstall all the processors (is a must, should be 6 on yours since it's 6 threads, also when it asks for restart, click on no and keep uninstalling all processors) on device manager like this:
    unknown.png

  • Uninstall AMD Chipset Software in control panel (if there is none, skip it.)

  • reboot the PC to bios, disable AMD fTPM and secure boot (if enabled by default), save and exit, go to bios again, flash to the latest bios (ver 7B86vHG1 the one with agesa 1.2.0.7), go to bios after finished updating, then load default or optimized settings, enable fastest xmp profile, then save and exit.

Optional: disable CSM, enable Above 4G Decoding and Resizable bar option (these 2 options wont be available unless CSM is disabled). If gpu supports, why not XD

  • if successful, boot up to windows and install the latest Chipset driver (should be ver 4.06.xx as the time i write this), then reboot. check in power plan and make sure ryzen balanced power plan is used instead of windows stock balanced.

  • Install the latest nvidia driver, reboot, and then connect to internet.

*do this all offline until reboot after installing chipset driver, put ram on slot A2 and B2 (slot 2 and 4) if you only use 2 ram sticks, also you may reboot to bios after all of this to set the XMP (and previous settings you did). Download needed files (highlighted word) before doing step 1, do the step by orders.

  • Run cmd as admin, then do chkdsk /x /f /r, after that do sfc /scannow

  • And check windows update if there is any and install them (except optional update).

  • Make sure the psu connected to the gpu is 1 pcie cable per 1 slot (use main cable, not the branches/split) like this:

As you need an adapter for my card i am using a split cable with only one of them plugged into the adapter. Could that be why, not getting sufficient power??

Ok that RAM looks a problem. It’s a mixture of 2x4gb and 1x8gb. This may cause it to run in single channel mode instead of dual. You would need to run cpu-z and under the memory tab see what it says for channels.

It’s also running at 2133mhz. This definitely hurts performance. You can try enabling XMP/DOCP in the BIOS to get it to run at 3000mhz but with the mixed RAM I would not be surprised if this was not stable but you might get lucky.

Its odd because i know when i set my pc up i set it so XMP was on i dont know why its turned itself off,the ram has also worked fine for my 980ti is there a reason it would cause the 3060ti to perform worse?

When the gpu is more powerful and can push higher fps it requires the rest of the system to be able to push that higher fps. CPU & RAM are very important to the best fps the system can achieve.

When playing is it also normal for my GPU usage to not go above 55% and only pulls max 140W

@sizzling answers are spot on. The ram is the culprit here with a very high certainty.

Single channel and slow ram hurts performance a lot. You are asking a powerful GPU to perform the same with others when their system are tuned for performance and well yours, is tuned for simply working.

probably, but 3060ti are not that power hungry, you could try to use 2 separate cable to that 12 pin splitter from nvidia and see if it worked, but firstly try the steps i suggest you above 😀

But the ram is odd. maybe try to use 2x4gb on slot 1 and 2, then the 8 gigs on 4?

Depends. If you have an fps limiter or the rest of the system are limiting the fps then it is expected not to fully utilise the gpu. You can turn up game settings/resolution, the fps won't improve but the game will look better and gpu usage will go up.
Just did another benchmark on rainbow six, on max settings it’s averages around 322 fps but on minimum averages around 260, is a 60 fps difference normal when running completely opposite settings?

Might just buy new ram, save me a headache

Gonna buy new ram, well overdue, any suggestions for cheap but effective 16gb ram?

That’s not what I would expect but I don’t have any first hand experience of that game.
I feel like at low settings on all the games ive tried the performance is really bad, its always almost the same as higher settings. Is there a possible cause for that as it would mot be effected by ram if its the same for both right?

Depends where you are and what is on sale, I’m UK based. Ideally a set of 3200mhz CL16 to 3600mhz CL18. If you find those speeds with lower CL then all the better.
If they are the same that is what I’d expect. When the cpu/RAM are limiting fps then changing most game settings won’t help.
In terms if a graphics card that would work if i sold this 3060ti have you got any ideas of an intermediate between the 3060ti and 980ti. I got the 3060 for £120 than it sells for on ebay so will just sell it on for a profit if needed

You still won’t get better fps by doing this. This site is not the most reliable but comparing gpu’s from such different generations is rare. A 3060 is between but to the point of not being worth it, just keep the 980Ti https://gpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/Nvidia-RTX-3060-vs-Nvidia-GTX-980-Ti/4105vs3439
