Hi all, newbie here so be kind.

I'm looking for a Graphics card for my sons PC, I've upgraded so he's now the 'proud' owner of my old rig, which is:

8 year old
i5-3570k overclocked
16gb ram
SSD and HDD
Windows 10

I never gamed so just used the onboard graphics

He wants to game originally only Minecraft so i fitted a GeForce GT 710 card which is rubbish

He now wants to play, Fortnite, CS Go, Fall Guys and the current graphics card is no good.

Could someone tell me what Graphics card i need to be getting him please as i have no idea where to start.

If you need anymore info please ask

Cheers guys, thanks in advance, Snaff

I bought for the time being a GT 1030 with minimal price impact. it can barely can any AAA titles but it won't disappoint it manages somewhere 16-30 fps on lowest settings, still a good long term alternative for overpricing. once the pricing market restored or even better if good deals and sale came to buy a better mid-level graphics card,it should cost anywhere from 130-180$ for entry-level and up to 300$ for mid-ranges (the true ones not the current ones) 300$+ for high-end RTX ones that run 4k at 80 fps

I've had the GTX 780 recommended. What's your thoughts? Obviously wont be the best but will it run the games he wants?
For 1080p it’s still an ok card, the 3gb can be limiting but turning down settings in games where it’s a problem works as a solution. However my 780 recommended a psu with at least 42A on the 12v rail. The 780 by today’s standards is quite power hungry for its performance. You will need at least a high quality 550w or better still 650w. What exact psu do you have and is it as old as the rest of the system?

Thanks for your help sizzling, my psu is newer but still a few years old. Its 750w and looks like 37A on the 12v rail.

That’s a red flag. 37A x 12v is a measly 444w, a good quality 750w psu would achieve over 700w on its 12v rail. This contradiction between the wattage sticker on the side of the psu and its own specification is a common sign of a no name brand and low quality.

I’d buy a used GTX 1080 Ti.
The prices for new GPUs are way too high compared to the MSRP now; also, they are almost nowhere to be found.
