Question New Graphics Card not recognized in BIOS

Hi all,

I bit ago I purchased a 3070 and ran into some problems with installation. I pushed it off until after school ended, so the warranty has expired by now; regardless, I don't think my issue lies with it. The graphics card isn't being recognized by the motherboard and does not appear in the BIOS. The BIOS recognizes a device in the PCIe slot but not the card. In the device manager, only a 'Windows Basic Display Adapter' appears under 'Display Adapters'. I initially thought this to be the result of an aging power supply but I've upgraded that and am still encountering the issue. Can't really explain my thought process behind why I thought it was the PSU but that was the last remaining component of my old PC so I decided to upgrade it anyway.

If it helps, I have been having issues with my motherboard since I purchased it but never nothing worth returning it for; I recognize that that may not have been the smartest choice but its the one I made. Is the motherboard defective? The card initializes and its fans spin just fine. I've flipped and reset the CMOS battery, which has always been finnicky since I built this computer last year, too. My cable management is a mess, so if this is a possible scenario for pinched cables, I would entertain the idea and remanage it all.

My old 970 works just fine in the place of the 3070.

MB: Gigabyte X570 AORUS Elite
PSU: Corsair RM650x (650 watt)
GPU: RTX 3070

Thanks! I appreciate any sort of insight.

How old is the PSU in your build? BIOS version for your motherboard at the time of writing? You might also want to parse images of your innards and the cables. I'm fairly certain that your cables might be fine since we've rarely had people come in here with pinched cables. Ruined a PSU with the wrong harness kind of issues but not pinched cables.

Hey, thanks for answering. The new PSU is, well, new. I purchased it only a few weeks ago. My BIOS ver. says F30 but I'm not too sure what that means, so hopefully that helps you. I'll be able to open up the case and investigate the wires again tomorrow, so unless I cross off everything else that may have to wait. I forgot to mention that the machine is using onboard graphics despite my monitors only being plugged into the video card, which transcends my understanding of how all that works. Like I said in my post, this issue occurred on both the old and new PSU, so I'm hesitant about the new PSU being the issue.

Hi all,

After some more thorough testing I believe a RTX 3070 I've ordered was DOA and I wanted to ask for advice before possibly returning it. The current circumstances are that the 3070 does not display but initializes and spins its fan. My old 970 is perfectly functional in the same setup. The 3070 is not recognized at all by the machine, not BIOS, not device manager, nothing. A slight oddity that may just be beyond my understanding is that the computer displays using what seems to be iGPU even though the machine does not have iGPU (Ryzen 7 3700x). Instead of the card, device manager displays 'Windows Basic Display Adapter'.

Am I misunderstanding the situation completely? Is the GPU functional but... awful? It only displays to one monitor using an HDMI to DP. The problem has persisted through two PSUs and I'm hesitant to replace the motherboard, despite the motherboard showing issues in the past (faulty CMOS battery / CMOS socket). Is the faulty CMOS battery possibly a cause, preventing the BIOS from registering the new device? I do not have another machine to test the card in. Could it be anything else? Mismanaged wiring, faulty cooling? I replaced the old PSU when I first encountered it as I bought it back in 2014 (never given me issues until now) and thought it appropriate to upgrade regardless.

My specs are:
Old PSU: 620w SeaSonic M12-II
New PSU: 650w Corsair RM650x
MB: Gigabyte X570 AORUS Elite
Old GPU: GTX 970
New GPU: RTX 3070

If you're on BIOS version F30 your board is pending BIOS updates. Gradually work your way to the latest using the known working GPU. Once that's done, check to see if your OS is pending any updates. Speaking of OS's, what OS are you working with? The thing about the PSU is, that if I were in your place, I'd have gotten a slightly higher wattage unit since the card has been known to draw more power than stated in certain scenario's.

Out of curiosity, did you remove your prior GPU's drivers using DDU, prior to removing the old GPU?

Lastly, please stick to one thread, unless you want your and the community's brains to end up into spaghetti.
