New Graphics card recommendations?

Doesn't the US have old age pension? And there's disability insurance out there, too.

I don't know how good the UK system is, but in Canada Health care is becoming more and more of a joke. An emergency room wait is about 8 hours MINIMUM in Winnipeg.

I've seen an old lady in an emergency waiting room with a broken hip wait 10 hours and her son finally just gave up and took her home. Seriously.

On the other hand, I've had a medical problem in the US and their system was incredibly speedy and efficient. Thank god I had insurance though...

All I'm saying is, it isn't so cut and dry, IMHO. A social welfare net is nice, but rediculously high tax rates for inferior service isn't ideal, either.

I'm just wondering what the tax rate over in Canada is?

Here in the UK we pay nothing on anything under around £5,000 (US $10,000) a year, then 23% income tax and 10% "National Insurance" on anything over that up to £33,000 per annum. Over that the tax increases to 30%.

EDIT! Thought i'd include that we also have a minimum wage of £5.15 an hour ($10).
 
Wow nice find I've been on the fence for awhile on when or what I should upgrade my old 850pro (OC but unlockable) card and well that did it for me (running a duel arock board) now all I have to do is wait for it to come in.

We have both Provincial and Federal taxes. For Manitoba the combined rates are:

up to $7500: 0%
up to $30,544: 26.15%
over $30,544 up to $36,378: 28.75%
over $36,378 up to $65,000: 35.50%
over $65,000 up to $72,756: 39.40%
over $72,756 up to $118,285: 43.40%
over $118,285: 46.40%

Of course there's also 13% sales tax (6% GST and 7% provincial)... but we don't have the VAT! :)

Minimum wage in Manitoba is $7.60

I should mention this is in Canadian dollars, worth about $0.85 US.

Yikes, I hope you really don't believe this notion. Anyway, this way off topic from this thread and I really didn't want to respond so I'll just say its the difference between and capitalist and socialist cultures. There is no need to bad mouth our country.
 
But what happens if you get made redundant? Become disabled? Have to care for a disabled family member? Need care yourself? Old age pension? etc etc

Higher taxes help keep MOST people clothed, fed and housed.

Let's not get off subject, but I had to respond to this. Higher taxes do not feed people. You're just giving more of your money for the government to spend. It's not the governments job to feed house or cloth you. How about a little personal responsibilty. Besides, I would like to decide how most of my money gets spent. And we do have welfare, social security (for now), and disability here in the States.
 
Our gov. gives people who dont work to much, you can live off of welfare alone and not have to work. It may not be great, but it is ridiculous how some people dont work because they know our gov will take care of them. IMO I think they should tone it down a bit, but I dont know maybe im apart of that 5% that you speak of, but then again if im not then i dont feel sry for the rest of the other people because everyone in my little town in the middle of no where Texas has a house anywhere from 6 thousand to 40 thousand square feet, so I suppose they arent doing to bad.

And there you were complaining about high taxes LOL! 17.5% VAT here, plus the petrol is almost $2 a litre. But compare this to the taxes in Scandanavian Nations (Almost 60% in some cases), it pales in comparison. But then again they do have the best healthcare, roads, public transport, public welfare etc.
 
This thread is quickly becoming a capitalism/socialism debate. So...
I am for personal responsibility and minimal government programs. It isn't my responsibility to feed and clothe the bum down the street that refuses to look for a job, nor is it anyone else's responsibility to feed and clothe me. Health care is getting expensive in the US, but many employers have good health care benefits. I know I pay nothing for mine and have excellent benefits. Higher taxes and a higher minimum wage do not equate to a higher standard of living. Governments take a larger chunk for overhead and cost of living goes up. I am fine right here in the US taking responsibility for my own needs, enjoying relatively low priced goods and relatively low taxes.
 
I'd just like to say, even though this has gone OT like crazy, I'm glad nobody has gotten too emotionally involved.

Personally I don't have a problem paying a bit more tax for universal healthcare. And I don't know about you guys, but I like the idea of a social safety net for people who, say, lose the use of their legs and don't have insurance. Or for really old people who have nowhere to turn.

On the other hand, I'm not particularly fond of the idea that we owe people who don't choose to find work food and shelter. I'm not talking about people who are genuinely trying to better their position in life, but there are people out there abusing the system.

Anyway, I don't think anyone's really bashing anyone else's country here, just a little disagreement about the way things should be run. Just be mindful to respect everyone else's position and we'll get along fine here. :)

I'm OK, actually. I'm in Winnipeg and I have a cousin in Minneapolis (about 6 1/2 hour drive). I order stuff to go to his place and visit him a couple times a year. Good times.

Then again since I've become a reviewer for Tom's Hardware most companies send me their stuff for testing anyway. :)

That's nice. Hey, can you send me some of them as gifts? It's so hard to find stuff here in Brazil and they usually charge 3-4 times higher than in the US.
 
I agree with much of what you just said, Cleeve. In my opinion, government programs should be exactly as you put it - a safety net for those who are in dire straits. It's just very difficult to design programs that cannot be taken advantage of. Just my $0.02.

I'm glad quantumsheep enjoys the practices of his or her own national government. Everyone has a right to take pride in one's own country and their way of doing things. I just respectfully disagree with many of those practices.
 
I need a new graphics card, mostly so I can play oblivion better. I have an 6800GS right now. I'd like to increase the view distance and get better FPS, expecially outside. When I'm outside and attacked by enemies, the FPS can drop down to the single digits, which is annoying.

I'm most familiar with the nvidia cards, so I was looking at the 7900GS and 7950GT. Any thoughts? I don't want to spend a ton (no more that 250 dollars) with DX10 on the horizon. I don't know must about the ATI cards, but if there is a good card in the price range, I'd be open to suggestions.

I'm most familiar with the nvidia cards, so I was looking at the 7900GS and 7950GT. Any thoughts? I don't want to spend a ton (no more that 250 dollars) with DX10 on the horizon. I don't know must about the ATI cards, but if there is a good card in the price range, I'd be open to suggestions.

That's a very good point and as i always try to see the best in people, so try not to look at the tiny minority that take advantage of the system.

Oh, and to the person who said this was turning into a Capitalist vs Socialist debate you gave me a little private chuckle! Calling the UK Socialist is like calling Iraq stable.

I think this discussion has gone on long enough, it's been enjoyable though seeing different opinions from around the globe!

I've checked it out and it's usually cheaper to live in the US with less income tax (your mortgage is a writeoff there!!) and paying for health insurance than it is to live in Canada and pay the colossal tax rates here.

And their cost of goods on many things (like computer parts) is also lower...

Well, part of that statement is true.... The mortgage is not a write off, it's just the interest on the loan.... But, because on your mortgage, most of the payment is the interest in the first 5-7 years, it just seems like you're writing most of it off.... And, because we can write off a lot of other stuff here in the states, the taxable income does go down quite a bit...
