Doesn't the US have old age pension? And there's disability insurance out there, too.
I don't know how good the UK system is, but in Canada Health care is becoming more and more of a joke. An emergency room wait is about 8 hours MINIMUM in Winnipeg.
I've seen an old lady in an emergency waiting room with a broken hip wait 10 hours and her son finally just gave up and took her home. Seriously.
On the other hand, I've had a medical problem in the US and their system was incredibly speedy and efficient. Thank god I had insurance though...
All I'm saying is, it isn't so cut and dry, IMHO. A social welfare net is nice, but rediculously high tax rates for inferior service isn't ideal, either.
