I just bought a new system and have run into more of an annoyance than a real problem. Everything is ready to go but the cpu, i got a amd64 3200 venice, and i don't know if i need thermal paste or not. There is like a powder substance on the bottom and I am not sure if thats AMD's thermal stuff or not. I have never seen the bottom of the heatsink before now. If I need it will the bottom of the heatsink be solid metal without a big square of powder?

oh and by the way, there is a big clear plastic shield for the bottom that needs to be removed if that helps anyone.

sorry i just don't want to screw it up. thanks.

That white pad is AMD's stock thermal stuff.

You shouldn't need any extra paste with AMD's retail package.

If you ever remove and re-seat the HSF though, you will need to replace it as it melts a little on first use. It's kind-of waxy stuff.

Well, technically speaking you should ensure that it remains free of any other substances, as anything stuck to it would end up sandwiched between the CPU and HSF and hinder conductivity. In practice, I doubt a few skin cells would make any noticeable difference  ..

Just try to avoid getting it covered in hair and you should be fine

And yes remove the plastic shield, but be sure to do it when you're going to assemble the cpu and the heatsink so it doesn't get dirty.
