You should be able to upgrade to any new graphics card provided you obtain a better power supply and make sure the card can fit into your case.

I was thinking of getting a 9600gt & 550W PSU, the only trouble is I have looked everywhere for the dimensions (HxLxW) no luck. Do you know of a website I could visit.

A good choice for a replacement power supply would be the Antec Earthwatts series.

5.9" wide x 3.4" high x 5.5" long for the Antec Earthwatts 500w.

There are some low powered graphic cards that would run fine on your present 300w power supply and give you a bit better performance then the GeForce 7600GS you're using now. The HD4670 or the low powered version of the 9600GT

If you do replace the power supply, you could go with a more powerful card then the 9600GT. Here's a graphic card hierarchy chart to show the relative positions of different cards.

What about a 4770. it may draw all the power it needs from the mother boards pci-e slot even though it requires a plug in.

His current card, the GeForce 7600GS pulls about 25- 30 watts at load. The HD4670 pulls about 60-65 watts and the 9600GT pulls about the same. The low powered 9600GT is probably (i can't find stats for it) pulling the upper 50s. The HD4770 pulls 80w.

You probably don't need to replace the power supply to use either an HD4670 or one of the low power 9600gt's;

If you are going to bother replacing the PSU at least get a card that will take advantage of it like an HD4850 or higher.

Don't forget to use sites like statice, very, very good for finding a snappa of a bargain.

Just make sure if you do take out a loan, you can repay the debt without interest.

The 4770's faster, cooler and quieter. The pci-e slot provides 75watts of power by itself.

I have spent the last day looking at prices and I have come up with the following:

Sapphire PCIe 2.0 HD4850 512MB Toxic =$187.60 AUD including transport.
Asus EN9600GT/HTDI/1G =$198.10 AUD including transport.
Asus EN9800GT HB/HTDI/512M GeForce 9800GT/DDR3 =$178.30 AUD including.
XFX PCIe 2.0 9600GSO 1.5GB Far Cry 2 =$183.20 AUD including.

I will be playing ARMA2 & ARMA this upgrade is the last for this case, I will then hand it down to my son when I have built my own rig. So any suggestion on the above would be much appreciated.

I'm not a fan of the Antec Basiq, it's their low priced bargain power supply with fewer connectors. Either of the other 2 are great power supplies, with the Corsair edging out the 500w earthwatts, but at $20 more it's a toss up. The best bargain for graphic card is the Sapphire HD4850 at $188. It's a pretty big step down to the 9800GT which would be my 2nd choice.

So Antec Earthwatts 500w and Sapphire HD4850 win.
