still more expensive than i am willing to pay whne i can fit my os plus all my steam games on it, then i will consider.. but not before. for now, i will stick to my 3x 500GB raid 0 sammys

Yeah...ssd's still need to drop in price by at least half before they will be worth it (imo). Don't get me wrong...I just got one and I love it(totally caved), but at least I admit it was a rip off... :)

Currently the new Onyx 2 SSDs aren't listed on Amazon or Newegg, and OCZ did not offer pricing or availability in Monday's announcement.

Then why is the title of the article "New Onyx 2 SSDs from OCZ Spell Affordability"?

Shouldn't there be some info on pricing before making the claim that these are "affordable"?

Also, Kevin, a quick Google search for the part numbers (which are listed on OCZ's website - 120GB: OCZSSD2-2ONX120G; 240GB: OCZSSD2-2ONX240G) shows that some European retailers appear to have the drives listed for pre-order (based on what I can gather from Google translations of the various sites) at around 155 GBP (~ $244 USD) and 340 GBP (~$536 USD) for 120GB and 240GB, respectively.

It's not a lot to go on, but it's at least a price assigned to the current drives, rather than the previous iteration of the Onyx SSDs.

No...that would make too much sense.

more importantly since I've seen nearly every brand's drives on sale at $2/GB or less recently, "affordable" as a distinction would need to be much closer to $1/GB

120GBs Right now on newegg:

Vertex 2 - $240.00
Agility 2 - $205.00 after rebate
Agility - $180.00 after rebate

Yep. $2/GB pretty much sucks right now.

Affordability for some, perhaps, but not me. Maybe that's an unfair prediction but I'm almost certain of it. I'll wait until they release their SSDs in the US and re-evaluate my statement.

[citation][nom]mlopinto2k1[/nom]$2/GB ain't that bad with all things considered!!!![/citation]
So, you want SSDs at that price. OCZ,you hearing? Never give this person cheaper drives!

My first purchase of a SSD last week for $70 for a meager 30GB that serving as an example is a poor price per GB ratio despite the performance gained over a mechanical drive. Most users aim for only what they can afford and right now you may as well forget about SSDs at this time. Most users purchase their drives below $99 usd that only meet their needs up to a few years max or fail before the drive could be upgraded when budget permits. Right now the costs of these drives is prohibitive especially for capacities greater than 128gb. What I would like to know is the cost of production and the margin of profit associated with each drive that is brought to market and sold for a given model. I am suspecting that they are milking this market while they can before costs decline to ware the market becomes driven only by share and competition. Small volume and limited customer affordability do not breed fair and decent prices. Prohibitive in industry when needed in large volumes.

[citation][nom]zoemayne[/nom]Why arent these manufacturers making ssd's w SATA III??? The C300 is like my only option.[/citation]

Because current controllers do not take advantage and performance per drive does not take advantage of this bandwidth then the controller on the boards is facing a bottleneck depending on how many pci-e lames it is given and the effective bandwidth to the cpu is even less. Eventually there will be SATA-4 standard a few years down the line depending on the growth and popularity of SSDs. You don't get 6gbs on these controllers as performance is less than what is advertised. It has been this way since the stone age even floppies don't deliver the performance that they are advertised much like every thing else. We don't see 433mbs of usb 2.0 but if you are lucky 33mbs.

You know i was staring hard at a Microcenter sale $69 for 69GB (forgot the manufacturer, though i think it was an OCZ), but the wife said no. Now, i'm kicking myself for not ignoring her. If they can give me that 120GB for $150-200 I'll bite.

While I appreciate OCZ's effort on SSD tech I'll continue to remain unimpressed until they can match Intel in random read/write tests especially with high queue depth because this is the reason why SSD makes the system so snappy, otherwise you might as well raid-0 some traditional disk drives.

Just had an OCZ Vertex go completely dead after about a month of use, with no warning of failure. System froze and after a cold boot the BIOS would not even detect it at all.

OCZ sent a brand new one (ie not a refurb) quickly with no arguments which was awesome.

Just makes me nervous about SSDs in general until they are cheap. I'm sure the margins on these things is crazy right now which is not acceptable to me unless I can count on the things lasting for at least 5 years.

When I see 128GB+ for 80 bucks I'll buy more. At least then I won't care so much if they suddenly crap out like SD cards and flash drives.
