[SOLVED] New PC build

Hi all.
Just built a PC from scratch (first time) and wonder of wonders - switched it on and the fans started whirring - its a start.
My problem is the monitor is blank & black.
There is power to the monitor- green light on bottom of monitor (it does work cause it came off a another install).
Checked the lead from monitor to the desktop - seems seated OK.
Anybody have any ideas please.
The motherboard is a G41M-VS3 - if it is any help there is no graphics card in it (yet).

CPU - Intel Q6600 (Quad Core @ 2.4GHz)
RAM - one 4gb card and one 2gb card
if you could suggest a cheap graphics card ???

It doesn't have embedded graphics so you need a dedicated GPU. Any cheap GPU would do it
