Hello, I'm starting to think about replacing my old HP prebuilt tower with an i7 4790 and GTX 960. I'm not in a rush to buy immediately since the system still serves me pretty well but it is noticeably getting slower while video editing in Premiere and After Effects.

I've never built my own PC before. It's been a goal of mine to do it but I'm a little intimidated by it. If you have any good "first-timer" mid-size case recommendations that are easy to build into that would be great.

Also, I'm open to any good prebuilt options.

Approximate Purchase Date: I'm waiting to see if my state has a sale tax holiday (usually in August) or possibly around Black Friday/Cyber Monday this year. So I'm not buying for a while, just trying to figure out my options.

Budget Range: Under $2,000 preferably.

System Usage from Most to Least Important: I'm a professional video editor using Premiere Pro & After Effects. I don't really game much but when I do it's usually simulation games like Planet Coaster or Cities Skylines.

Are you buying a monitor: Eventually I plan to upgrade to a dual 4k monitor setup. Right now I have Dual 1080p monitors.

Parts to Upgrade:
Everything case and all.

Do you need to buy OS: Yes, Windows 11 Home

Preferred Website(s) for Parts: Newegg, Amazon, Best Buy

Location: Massachusetts, USA

Parts Preferences: I can't decide between Intel or AMD Ryzen. I appreciate any advice you can give about which offers the best value/performance ratio or which one works best with Adobe.

I know I want an Nvidia GPU for the CUDA cores. I was looking at a 3070 or 3070ti (maybe a 3080 if the budget can handle it.

I also want at least a 512gb NVMe SSD as a boot drive and at least a 2 TB SATA drive for storage

Definietly 32gb of DDR4 ram (DDR5 if possible)

Overclocking: Maybe

SLI or Crossfire: Maybe

Your Monitor Resolution: Currently dual 1080p monitors hooked up through HDMI. Planning to upgrade to dual 4k monitors at some point.
Additional Comments: (e.g.: Need to have a window and lots of bling, I would like a quiet PC. Please also list specific software or games you're using)

And Most Importantly, Why Are You Upgrading: Right now I have an old outdated HP prebuild with an old i7 4790 and GTX 960.

Thanks for the great reccomendations! I'll add these to my part picker list, do more research and keep checking prices.

I love the case it looks really sleek and easy enough to work with. Also, definitley a smart idea to include the unreleased "4070" in the build since I'm not ready to pull the trigger yet.

i would recommend going with more cores on the cpu and more VRAM for your video editing tasks. But looking at Nvidia GPU options, you are stuck with the 4070...

Is there a specific model CPU you would recommend? I'm thinking an i7 but not sure which one to pick from the 20 13 gen models they have listed

A ryzen 7900X or even the older gen 5950X or the i7 13700 depending on your use case...

Another advice is having multiple storage drives to reduce bottlenecks.

Using separate read and write drives is a common practice for video editors. Storage drives are the easy to sort bottleneck in most cases...

Yes, I am planning to have more storage drives for video footage. I have some 2.5" Sata SSDs already that I can bring over from my current PC or buy new ones later.

Thanks for the CPU recommendations. For $2 more, it looks like I could go with the 13700K. I realize if I go with Ryzen I would have to get a different motherboard than Why_Me recommended.

I wouldn't do 13th gen anyway, with the killer combo deals on 12th gen. Hard to say no to a $70 Z690 board, valued at $260 or less, when buying a 12th gen K series chip. Their AM5 bundles are pretty sweet too, though, if OP is interested in having future upgrade options.

I'm leaning towards going with 12 gen as well to save money. I'm not sure if it would be wise to go down to a 3070 gpu instead of 4070? I don't need everything to be state of the art but i do want this machine to last 8-10 years with some upgrades of course.

8-10 years is asking a lot, with how tech has been advancing, in recent years. AM5 has support through 2025+, so you might want to consider that instead. Get the best GPU you can afford.

I managed to make my pre-built HP last 8 years so I would hope to at least that much out of a system I'm spending twice as much for haha.

I'll definitely try to get the 4070, I just hope it's on the lower end of the rumored price point and not $700+. GPUs have gotten crazy expensive since I upgraded my current PC.

That was easier to do, in the stagnation that was 2nd through 7th gen Intel. Now that AMD is finally competing, things are moving quite a bit faster.

True but trying to be on the bleeding edge is exhausting and expensive. A capable CPU/GPU doesn't just stop being capable because a new model comes out that's twice as fast the following year. I don't mind running my tech into the ground until it no longer meets my needs. Of course, that means I'd like to get the best I can reasonably get now at a decent value to keep the system working longer.

That's why I recommended AM5. You could easily do a drop in CPU upgrade, with just a bios update, later on. No need to tear down your whole system, and get a new motherboard. Microcenter's 7900x bundle deal, with ram and motherboard, is pretty sweet.

I found the CPU bundle you were referring to on the Micro Center bundle page. This one, right? https://www.microcenter.com/product...ries-32gb-ddr5-6000-kit,-computer-build-combo

It's a great value, it just sucks that I have to drive all the way to Boston to get it. Microcenter needs to build a store in western mass :disrelieved:

Mine is in the St Louis area, and it is about 1.5hr drive for me too. I just make a day out of it. Usually eat a restaurant, that I cannot get in my little hick town. Also often go to Bass Pro, and/or Cabela's, while I am at it. They are only about 15 mins away from my Microcenter.

Yeah, that's a good point. I literally just have to get on i90 and drive for 1.5 hours and it looks like the store is basically right off the highway.
