Heya guys
So sorry for n00b question, but its my first time building a pc so cut me soem slack. Here is my system:
Intel P4 2.4c ghz
Gigabyte 8knxp
512mb Cosair 400 ddr ram
120 gb sata hdd
samsung cd rom and samsung floppy drive and so on...

I put the pc together yesterday but now when I start up the xp install it tell me I need to install drivers for my sata drive. Exactly where do i get the drivers?
off the gigabyte install cd? and how do I install them? (e.g can I burn to cd and install off that or do I have to put em on floopy or what?

Also is there any other good sites out there for constructing a pc? and installing hardware/ software?

thanks guys

No, you don't need to load drivers. Here's the key: Your board has multiple SATA controllers, and the main one is on the chipset. BUT you need to:
1.) Use the main controller, SATA headers for that are probably listed as SATA 1 and 2.
2.) Set that controller to non-RAID mode.

In non-RAID mode, the board should show your drives in BIOS, and XP installation should see them as it would a PATA drive.

So, since you don't need any additional controllers, disable all the RAID stuff and connect your drives to SATA 1 and IDE 1. Arrange the drive order in BIOS, and you're set.

He doesn't need to install any drivers.

Still amaze me that people doesnt take the time to read the manual fully and take the time to know their board better. I guess that they just drop the board in the case, and refer to the manual only to plug the power button and reset switch and ...

Still amaze me why board maker still set RAID as default in BIOS.. Gigabyte seem one of them... to make sure newbies get more confused ...

Still amaze me why people still think that SATA=RAID...

The problem has become common enough I'll probably add an SATA controller section to the motherboards FAQ this weekend, if I have time.

Well, I was thinking about doing a motherboard setup FAQ, but I'm not really sure that peoples that should read it will do it BEFORE posting, so I decided to cancel the project, but good luck anyway.

Apparently most MB manufacturers are setting the RAID controller on by default these days. You need to get into your BIOS and disable it. Also, the SATA HDD and cable are fine, when you set up both disks Windows (I assume you're using Windows) will simply detect the SATA drive as an IDE drive and you should have no problems.

I dont understand why people dont read through the manual either. I always download the Adobe version when I order my MOBO's and by the time that I get it I have read the manual.

He wasnt suggesting that you put the SATA on a non SATA IDE. Just put the SATA HD where Crash said to put it and change your BIOS. If you still dont understand what to do in the BIOS then you better read that section of your manual before yo screw your system up.

SATA does not mean RAID, RAID does not mean SATA. These are two different things that can be separate or combined. In the case of your Intel SATA controller, it can operate in either RAID or standard SATA mode. In RAID mode it requires a special driver, in standard SATA mode it doesn't.

RAID means Redundant Array of Independant (or Inexpensive) drives. ARRAY means multiple drives. You're not setting up an array, therefor you'd be best served to use the Intel SATA controller in non-RAID mode.
