I built a new PC today, turned out to be both easier and much more difficult to do than I expected. The building part went perfectly.
I'm building 2, so we bought 2 of everything, 1 for me and 1 for my younger brother. We could not for ANYTHING get the first hard drive to show up. Spent over 3 hours searching and searching for solutions. Finally, we took his hard drive, brand new, same brand and model as the one we were trying to put in mine - came right on. So the first hard drive was clearly dead.
But the 2nd one seems to be a bum too. Would not install our copy of windows 8. We used the tool from the microsoft website to create a flashdrive, as I haven't bought an optical drive and will be using the one from my old pc at a later time.
This is where the fun really starts... Another 4 hours trying to partition the drive. Tried doing it manually, tried doing it auto, tried doing it with the command promps - It all failed to make one. So, just to try it out, we erased windows 8 off the flash drive, and instead made a live flashdrive for ubuntu. Couldn't partition the drive with that either, so I'm assuming that BOTH drives are bum drives.. What are the chances? Needless to say, as long as I have a choice, I'll never buy another seagate HDD...
Anyway, I was going to attempt to use the windows 8 flash drive (spent another hour re-creating it after erasing ubuntu from the flash) and just try the upgrade option on my old hard drive and hopefully it wouldn't erase the 1.4tb of data I have on it.... Wasn't sure if I could upgrade from windows 10 to windows 8... Anyway, something awesome happened... Something that I've seen 1000 threads all over the net, including here I believe, saying couldn't be done....
It did not try to install windows 8, instead, it instantly brought up my old desktop... USING WINDOWS 10!!! WOOOO!!!! Upgrading to 10 from 8 was the original plan anyway, so that all works out.
Now, yet again I've run into another problem....
When first turning on the PC with the drive that wasn't even registering at all, I used the internet option to upgrade drivers on my mobo. This is a wired bridge connection. 2 routers are bridged, and a wire is running from 1 of the routers to my pc. I was able to do all internet options from the bios, but now that I'm accessing my desktop, I cannot connect to the internet. Even with the ethernet cable connected.
I went into networks, attempted to set up a new internet connection, used the correct user/pass multiple times... My process is:
"How do you want to connect?"
Broadband (PPPoE)
Then I get the window asking for the username and password provided by ISP. Our ISP did not give us a user or password, it's always just been plug and play... Our router's both have identicle names and passwords... So first I tried using nothing. Then I attempted using the router info, and I've done both MANY times at this point.
I get this error:
Connection failed with error 651:
The Modem (or other connecting device) has reported an error.
I've tried all the solutions I could find on google, but none of them fixes the issue... I know my ethernet card is working, as I said, the bios upgraded over the internet earlier today. I just can't create the connection on my desktop
