Hi everyone:

I haven't built a new computer for about 4 years; my current computer is showing signs of strain (a few unexpected shutdowns, 128 GB SSD almost full, slowing down etc). I mostly do photo editing - Lightroom, Photoshop, panoramics and HDR. I have over 1 TB of photos on a NAS in RAID 1. Of course normal web surfing, emailing etc will be done; I will also be doing some video editing. I will not be reusing any components except for a couple of data HDDs that I will swap over - the old computer will be wiped, Win 7 reinstalled and handed down to my kids. I really want a computer that is as quiet as possible, I like a clean look without flashing lights, side windows etc.

I'm in Canada and will order from NCIX. My budget is around $1500 but I'm OK with more if necessary. I have an IPS monitor, 1920X1200, already have keyboard, mouse and speakers. The build I have listed below is based on some things I've read from recent similar builds (including some here on Tom's). I'm OK with doing a little overclocking where necessary. I often play music on the computer as I'm editing. No crossfire or SLI - not necessary for me as I don't do much gaming. I won't likely upgrade components as the computer ages - I like one that will last around 4 years before replacing it.

This forum helped me a lot last time - thank you in advance for reading and commenting!

I would recommend this for $150 more. If you don't want to be spending that much, get the i7-3770K and the P8Z77-V LK instead.

Controller differences. Although people think Sandforce is unstable and whatnot, it's been doing good, but the 840 PRO's controller is better. If you want a slightly faster and more reliable one for the extra cost, get the Samsung.

Antec P280 , the R4 or another quiet case .

no need for a sound card . Esp one thats probably worse than the built in sound on the mb

Use a quiet cpu cooler . Scythe Kabuto 2 would be high on the list for people with a budget .

Not sure why you want such a powerful gaming graphics card , but use a Gigabyte model with the windforce cooler . Its quieter.

Use windows 8 64 bit .PRO if you need it .
Better licence , longer life ahead , many improvements , and you can make it look and feel exactly like 7 for $0 and 6 minutes of uninstalling metro apps

Thanks Outlander!

I'd looked very hard at the P280, but it's quite big. I use an Antec case at the moment so I'm partial to them anyway. I guess it's not much bigger than the one I had listed. Thanks for the info on the sound card - I was wondering about that. And I hadn't looked at the Scythe cooler so I willtake a good look at that too, as well as the graphics card.

I'd never considered Win8 but I will now. All great suggestions - thank you!

UPDATED:

Based on input so far, this is my new list:

CPU: Intel Core i7-3770K 3.5GHz Quad-Core Processor ($319.99 @ Amazon Canada)
CPU Cooler: Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO 82.9 CFM Sleeve Bearing CPU Cooler ($31.05 @ DirectCanada)
Motherboard: Asus P8Z77-V PRO ATX LGA1155 Motherboard ($196.98 @ Amazon Canada)
Memory: Patriot Viper 3 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR3-1600 Memory ($100.47 @ Amazon Canada)
Storage: Seagate Barracuda 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive ($69.99 @ Amazon Canada)
Storage: Samsung 840 Pro Series 256GB 2.5" Solid State Disk ($249.79 @ DirectCanada)
Video Card: Gigabyte GeForce GTX 660 2GB Video Card ($199.00 @ Canada Computers)
Case: Antec P280 ATX Mid Tower Case ($109.98 @ NCIX)
Case Fan: Noctua NF-P12-1300 54.4 CFM 120mm Fan ($16.99 @ Newegg Canada) X2
Power Supply: XFX 650W 80 PLUS Bronze Certified ATX12V / EPS12V Power Supply ($74.99 @ NCIX)
Optical Drive: Lite-On iHAS124-04 DVD/CD Writer ($17.79 @ DirectCanada)
Operating System: Microsoft Windows 7 Professional SP1 (OEM) (64-bit) ($144.99 @ Newegg Canada)
Total: $1549.00

I can't really justify the increased cost for the i7-3930. For photo editing the improvement wouldn't be enough, and I only plan on doing a little video editing. If I was more into video, the story would be different.
The Scythe cooler isn't available at NCIX yet, neither was the memory (although I changed the memory to something similar to what was recommended - I hope).
Video card was changed
I changed to the Antec case as I've used them before, and didn't want a side window.
I also changed the power supply as suggested, although I went with the 650 as it is actually cheaper than the 550 this month at NCIX.
Took out the sound card and network adapter - seems that these are unnecessary now?
I stayed with the Samsung SSD as I'm more familiar with it than the Sandisk (although I use Sandisk SD cards exclusively in my cameras!)
Still undecided about Win 8 vs Win 7 - seems opinions vary a lot on that.
Added two case fans to go behind the HDDs (one HDD purchased, and one or two tranferred from current computer)

I'd really appreciate any other opinions people out there have. A big thanks to everyone who's contributed their ideas so far - it's great to have opinions from people who know so much about this stuff!

Whoops! Another mistake - the RAM is now not listed at NCIX. So I picked this one based on the fact that it's similar to RAM I purchased once and has worked well. Please weigh in on this as I know little about picking RAM!

I'm probably going to make a decision in the next day or so; anyone who would like to give me their thoughts on the build is welcome to do so. Anyone have any thoughts on Win8 vs Win7?
Thanks again!

So the build was done, I've been doing some photo editing and the performance difference from my old computer is really noticeable! Editing in Lightroom and Photoshop is much faster - I didn't do any benchmarks but I'm very happy with the performance. NCIX did a great job in the build; I did have a problem with Windows Explorer shutting down on me so just needed to update the firmware on the components (some had been done but a couple of key updates were missing) and all was well. Haven't bothered OCing yet - don't need to! Thanks to everyone for their advice.
