Just bought an AMD Athlon X4 645 processor

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835200063

This fan that I listed is the right size, right Watts, and right 4 pin connector for the motherboard. I have an AM3 socket, will this work? I don't see anywhere listed AM3 and I'm not that computer savy just yet.

If this fan will not work, will my stock one work thats in the dell inspiron 570? Reason I ask is because I'm pretty sure that some dell inspiron models come with the Athlon X4 that I just bought. Ran Battlefield 3 at the highest res and high-medium settings and the hottest the CPU got was 58C

If i do need to upgrade will that heatsink be good? If not can anyone tell me one that will?

AM3 socket
95W
92MM
4 PIN
for AMD

Yeah, a pic would seriously help here (I'm not grasping what you're saying). Do you mean the surround around the socket? I'm not aware of anything other than that, honestly.

Yeah I guess do you know when you buy a heatsink and it has four screws than there's something that's black it goes on the bottom of the heatsink and than u screw it in. Do I need that black thing though? Temps are running about 12-14 degrees cooler now. If u need a pic could I have an email or something idk how to post them on there

If the temps are that good, I'd say you did it right, but I'm still not quite sure what you're describing. That doesn't sound like anything I've ever heard of other than the surround on AMD sockets, so I honestly don't know if you need it or not. If it's working that well, though, I wouldn't worry about it.

That makes a LOT more sense now. That's a back plate that goes onto the back of the mobo to hold the heatsink in place. How did you get it installed without it? It may work, but it certainly won't be very stable.

Also, that heatsink is specifically for Intel's like the other one, so I really don't know how you even got it installed.

well it has springy screws on it so i put the heatsink into place and than i screw the screws in... not all the way because i dont wanna crush anything but its sturdy didn't move an inch when i tried movin it

That is certainly a new one for me. That's why people told you that it wouldn't work because it shouldn't have.

yeah i dunno, not bull sh**tin ya either... tried pluggin it in leavin the far right open and it didn't work, than left the far left pin open and it did work.... guess i got lucky? maybe because its just a standard fan it even looks kinda like the stock one

I'd say luck is a big part of, yeah, LOL. It still doesn't sound like it's absolutely correctly installed (all four pins in), but if it's tight and doesn't move, you're good.

well i mean all 4 pin aren't all the way in but it felt tight when they were half way through so i just stopped because i dont wanna crap anything or mess it up ya know? 1 more question for ya, can I run my PC with the side of it off? I really dont have good venalation in this stupid inspiron so i took it off and it dropped another like 7-8 almost immediately. can leaving the side off mess it up or anything? or maybe i can take my power drill and drill a couple holes in the side if it can mess it up
