How does this configuration look.....any problems? Any better parts that might lower this cost? This system is predominantly for internet, office, web programming, and light gaming. He does want to spend more and get the 19" LCD (I really need help getting the best monitor for about $550). I'll probably switch out that case for something a little better (no time to look now...any suggestions?). Trying to get the best bang for the buck on this system..price is important, but I'd rather spend a little more for quality get a piece for dirt cheap:

MAXTOP Signature Series Type I with 350W Power - $38.00
Optorite DVD+/-RW Dual Layer - $72.00
LG Electronics Beige 52X CD-ROM, Model GCR-8523B (B), OEM - $15.50

I would be leary of the powersupply that is included in that case. Most are lower quality, and voltages are not always adequate. Important for system stability.

These were suggested by Scottkli under CPU's.

When building cheap systems you got to ask yourself..
Do you want the cheapest system or the one that will cost less and last awhile.

I would suggest:
Antec Solution Series case
MSI Neo Platinum 754socket
AMD 64 3000+
Corsair Value Select Ram 512mb
WD 80Gb JB
Samsung Floppy and DVD-Rom
ATI Radeon 9600 Pro
Microsoft Keyboard/Mouse Optical
Around $600+

Cheapest:
Asus A7N8X-VM 400 - 80
AMD Athlon 2500+ - 80
Corsair Value Select - 75
Antec Solution Series - 65
Microsoft K/M Optical - 30
WD 80Gb JB - 65
Floppy - 10
CDRom - 20
Total = $425

Thanks for the input, Rich. You don't think that the 64-bit cpu is a little overkill for this system (video card too)? Those two things alone cost almost $150 more than the configuration I put forward. Thanks again!

for 241.00 you can get an Athlon 64 2800 With mboard Gigabyte GA-K8VM800M with cpu fan. this will give you a lot longer system life. check out cpu & mobo combo on pricewatch.com. also i dont see the need for 2 sets of 5.1 speakers, so you save yourself 43.00! ;-) you can drop the second cd rom as well and just pick up a pioneer dvd+-rw for 80.00 (i think i recently saw it for that amount, check out techbargains.com). there isnt a need for 2 unless its a want. depending on where you want to cut cornors you should be able to get your price down. good luck.

1 Seagate 160 gig ATA 133,

D. VINE 4 Chassis (moded)

Onesaint, that second set of speakers was my error (nice catch). The CD-ROM was for CD --> CD copying only, so that cheap one should suffice (he actually wanted this set up). THanks for the input, I am considering the 64-bit upgrade for $80.

You're spending just $230 on mobo, memory and CPU yet $549 on the monitor? Sounds crazy to me. Get a 17" LCD or 19" CRT and save a fortune.

I'd defintely consider a more powerful PSU; 350W is pretty low these days. Furthermore, how critical is it to have a cordless mouse? Get a mouse with a wire and save over $50.

glad to help! also see if you can get him to go down on the cordless mouse. maybe offer the MS one as noted by RichPLS.

Arkus and endyen,

The KB/mouse, and especially the monitor will be around for more than this system. Systems are disposable, but the monitor should be fine for years....why wouldn't you spend a little extra for a nice monitor and the convenience/viewing area of a 19" LCD?? Makes sense to me. Thanks for the input though.

you may have a point but only because the technology isnt moving as fast. if they cam out with new monitors as fast as they do cpus youd need a new one every 2 years or so.

but you sound like youve got a nice system planned.

onesaint, I agree with you. If it were 2-3 years ago, I would probably have told him to hold off, but now they seem to have plateau'd. Thanks a bunch for the comments. Anyone have any comments on the best 19" LCD for $550?? Also, is there a better video card choice for $70 than an AOpen GF FX 5500?? Thanks again.
