Hey,

Plan to make a system for younger brother using parts from my current computer but building another for myself.

current rig( will be handed over to brother)
-E8400( changing this to E5200 )
-asus p5k motherboard
-8800 gts evga
-crucial bal 800mhz 2x1gig
-ocz 600 watt psu
-cm690 case
(said as long as it can play WOW on max its good enough...so whatever right)
monitor will be a samsung 22 inch 2ms response.

built this first rig just to see if i could(was simple) works great! even clocked the cpu to 3.6ghz.

Now for the new rig(looking to spend $600-$1000)
-E8400( or just shoot for the i7?)

-Motherboard- for single card but maybe one that can cross/sli good if wanted in the future( need help to figure this one out and would like it to be Asus but hey anything that is good)

-for a gpu im looking at the 4890's...but could still go for Nvidia

-ram not sure what to look at. would like change from 800mhz to 1066 or 1333 higher with the right mobo but keep the price in the mid range...

-PSU i know that ocz 600watt would be good enough for a single 4890 so for the rig that im giving to my brother would a 500 watt work to still keep his running?

-changing the case to the CM HAF 922 mid or the CM sniper.

- will be hooked up to a 37in LG scarlett

lmk your take
and if you think im nuts go ahead and make fun.

thanks for your time.

hey,

just for general gaming- budget 600-1000$

We do like things a bit more oraganized:
http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/261222-31-build-advice

But I think I get your drift.

The E8400 is a great chip, but I would not be into building a whole new platform at this stage to support it.

The reign of the quads is coming.
(Do you like that? You can quote me if you like, put it in your signature, or maybe make a website with just those words in white letters on black....)

Ahem. Sorry about that. I was just saying that the move is on to more cores, so I don't think it's a good idea building with an E8400 today. We're promoting AMD X3 and X4 builds for lower budgets right now because of that.

Then there is i5, the mainstream platform from Intel coming in Sept.

So I guess it all depends on your budget.

- It will cost less to build with your E8400 and you could always upgrade later to a Q9550 or Q9650. That will be the limit of your platform, as it's dead, no new CPUs.
Gigabyte UD3P would be your choice for a board:

Add some good RAM and you are around $180, with a later upgrade to a quad, let's say a total of $400

- You can do pretty well on an AM3 platform currently. That might have a bit more longevity for upgrades and is fairly competitive in gaming benchmarks. You can get an X4 955, 790GX board, and 4GB DDR3 for around $450.

- On the other hand, you can get an i7, X58 board, and 6GB DDR3 for around $570.

Those are the differences in costs on the various builds, so you decide :)
