New to SSDs, have question about TRIM

My understanding is that TRIM significantly increases an SSD's performance by preventing degradation of performance overtime from writing. So I guess in a way it really preserves its performance instead of increasing it.

But anyway, my question is this, do I have to manually turn on TRIM, download any software or otherwise do anything on my part to get it "working" If the SSD itself comes with TRIM support and I'm using windows 7?

As rolli59 stated, you should verify if TRIM is enabled. You really don't know when it's actually doing something.
