I don't understand why New York is allowing a coal power plant to be running in the area just to power crypto mining. That's just insane. But other than that I'm not sure how you would enforce this if someone does it at home.

Every TWh of renewable energy consumed by crypto is 1TWh less renewable energy that would otherwise have been applied towards reducing the amount of fossil fuel energy in the overall mix.

Haha, crypto mining is nothing.

The real pollution is from the vehicles in USA. The fuel guzzling 3L-4L V8s. USA uses over 9.2 million barrels of gasoline a day (92% from light duty vehicles)..... By contrast entire Europe (including UK, exclude Russia) uses 2.5 million barrels a day.

So, USA is really one big gasoline sucker and massive massive polluter...

The real problem is the fear of nuclear power plants. A modern nuclear power plant is the cleanest form of energy production by far. They produce 1 gigawatt of electricity per plant. If electric vehicles are the future we will require many nuclear plants or the grid will simply be unable to handle the demand.

We make our own, we also produce more oil than anyone else. Have you ever checked a map? The nation is huge.
Also, if they pay for it, they can burn all they like. At least until it gets more expensive, the price in the usa is cheap.
As a rule, humans will not fix a problem until they are dangling on the precipice of their own destruction.
Give us time.

I would say ban USA from using excessive gasoline. There is no reason why USA uses 3x more gasoline than Europe.

Of course you can burn as much as your want.... But the whole world gets your CO2 as well.... IF you can contain all the CO2 you produce in your own country, nobody really cares.

Time is one commodity we may not have since severe droughts and other weather events are increasing in frequency and severity around the world. The point of no return may already have been crossed. Glaciers are melting at the fastest rates on record releasing previously unknown methane deposits and raising the ocean level to the point of flooding coastal regions.

The next decades are going to be a mess.

Now divide that fuel usage by the GDP and you get a different picture.

And not all polluters are the same. Modern cars actually reduce NOx and CO (monoxide).

Coal releases sulfur mercury and a ton of other really nasty stuff into the atmosphere. Then there are the ash sludge ponds.

Great now tell me where you will store all the nuclear waste for HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS of YEARS.

"Modern" (first cities of Ur / Mesopatamia) didn't occur till about 5000 years ago. You think we can safely engineer something to store waste for hundreds of thousands of years.

If you want to see a ticking time bomb, look at the waste burial site @ bikini atoll.

Marshall Islands 'nuclear coffin' in danger of leaking nuclear bomb waste due to sea level rise - The Washington Post

It may be centuries before the exclusion zone near Chernobyl will be habitable.

IF you look at GDP, thats even worse..... USA GDP is around 21 trillion, EU is 18 trillion..... 18x more gasoline for just 3 trillion.....

According to this website eu consume 12.91 billion barrels of oil a day. 18 million barrels per day usa.

While the ratio is still in your favor (bully for you) don't pretend you're all that much better than us.

You europeans build a lot of diesel cars. Not gasoline. It's because the govt taxes you on the size of your engine displacement. So yep it's really apples and oranges. Diesel while more efficient produces a lot more particulates per mile.

Comment #20 and no one has chimed in that this is obviously just a move by Wall Street to crush the little guy and eat out our substance. Preventing the new Crypto economy from curing the ills of the old banking system to fatten their wallets.

Too many level heads for a internet forum!

I think like much New York law making this is all for show and of little substance. New York's high power rates and low proximity to the crypto farms of China make this much ado about nothing that was happening in the state anyway.

If they banned financing crypto farms from New York then they could be having a large effect. Who is more responsible for the "environmental damage" the tech installing the cards in the farm or the big wigs financing the whole operation.

My preference is that crypto collapses of it's own valuelessness without government intervention of any kind. If the goverments take action then these scammers and their victims/(fools who should know better) will have a scapegoat rather than a reckoning with the emptiness of their hopes.

Don't forget that VW and almost all the big Auto Makers were lying to the EU and the rest of the Global governments for decades on the Diesel emissions, so that actual diesel Environmental damage from the EU vehicles is ALOT higher than the basic 12.91 billion Barrels of oil a day.
Most of the US runs on Gasoline which is cleaner than Disesel for regular cars.

EU is Diesel heavy and ended up polluting alot more than expected thanks to big Auto Lying about things.

And guess what, they're lying about the clean/green effects of manufacturing all those batteries.

Trying to harvest that much battery for every vehicles is also going to be incredibly polluting.

And ALOT of folks will chuck their cars out and get the latest and greatest like they were getting a new iPhone of the year.

Ergo creating alot more pollution by unnecessarily manufacturing all those BEV's.

Atleast with Plug-In Hybrids, the amount of Battery you need per vehicle is ALOT less, ergo the pollution factor per vehicle is alot less.

Big Auto trying to push BEV's as your magical clean solution is short sighted and just swinging the pendulum in the other direction.

lol. If anyone tries to fix the bankers then they will die. If you think for one second that cryptocurrency could displace the evil central banks without a huge bloody war then you are severely mistaken.

The folks who own the banks run the world. Politicians are nothing but puppets.
