Haven't looked at hardware since 2016...

Buying a laptop, Passmark scores i7 12800HX better than i9 13900H. I am going to use the laptop for content creation, Adobe After Effects, and Premiere Pro. Is one significantly better than the other? Using common sense I'd think the i9 would be better than the i7? Any wisdom?
Thanks!

Generally, but Intel has been doing chip configuration a little differently and ruining their naming conventions.

HX has 8 Performance cores and 8 Efficiency cores

H has 6 Performance cores and 8 Efficiency cores.

The individual cores on the 13900H are much faster in that they can boost to 5.4Ghz, but there are only 6 of them, vs the 8 of the HX. So that will alter the performance numbers significantly.

So the better comparison would be the i7-12800HX to the i9-13900HX which have the same core configuration.

Both are high end processors.
Not a significant difference.
The i9-13900H might be my preferred unit because if the higher single thread speeds.

FWIW.
I3/i5/i7/i9 no loner indicate the number of cores and hyperthreading.
They are now a more general indication of performance class.

Although the Puget Systems article (link below) is aimed at owners of desktop CPUs, it might be of use:

In practice, much of the heavy lifting in Premiere Pro is done by the GPU.

The graph above is for desktop GPUs, but I'd still advise getting the most powerful laptop GPU you can afford. You'll need it.

Be prepared for some very long waits (in the order of hours or tens of hours) if you are rendering long videos.

Thanks again!
I used to use Newegg to buy computers. Is there a better place for a wide array of computers to choose from?

Newegg still has the best search tools. I generally start there, take any interesting models and search for them generally to see if the prices are any better.

Amazon has many models, but no good way to filter searches.

All the OEMs have their own websites to go through in addition to selling at the usual online retailers.

Walmart, BestBuy, etc carry a selection of computers, limited, but useful filters for what they have listed.

Just as an FYI all of the HX laptop CPUs are repurposed desktop CPUs so they'll generally have more performance cores and higher power usage.
