Newbie needs help

hi i revently completed a 12 week it maintanence course,however,it hadnt covered what i wh=idhed really,i would like to learn more about fixin slow runnin computers,so if i have a slow laptop,i check task manager,if thats ok ill check msconfig,and check what programs are runnin on start up,then shud i run a disk defreag? and ccleaner? anythin else ye would recommend,also whats best program for detecting viruses and removin,and do i use this program in safemode of usvb stick if i cant access windows

AVG.........for viruses....and free. Don't need to do so in safe mode.
