I’ve been lurking for awhile but now I’m getting ready to make the leap and build a PC. I’m almost a complete newbie to this so I would really appreciate it if someone would check my potential build for disastrous mistakes, omissions, incompatibilities, or even just suggestions.

Thanks!

^ Depends on who makes the PSU... For example, a Corsair 450 VX will easily power a quad-core and a high end graphics card. Check the 12v rail ratings; as long as you've got around 30A you should be fine (as long as the system isn't HEAVILY OC'ed or SLI/X-Fired).

My Silverstone 400w does fine with my overclocked quad and GTS 250.

Sorry for the double post, but here's what I would choose were I building a new cheaper/mid-range gaming and general use pc:

newegg.com

Processor: Phenom II x3 710/720 BE or Core 2 Duo E7400 ~$125

Motherboard: GIGABYTE GA-MA790X-UD4P/GIGABYTE GA-EP45-UD3L ~$100

Memory: Crucial Ballistix 2x2 GB kit DDR2-800 ~$45

Video: XFX Radeon 4850/XFX GeForce GTS 250 ~$140

Case: Cooler Master Centurion 5 ~$50

Power Supply: Silverstone ST400 or Corsair 450 VX ~$50

Hard drive: Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 (whatever size you'd like) ~$60

Your choice of optical drive.

I understand that some of these parts are debatable, but they're really all the market equivalents of each other. The Core 2 will give better gaming performance if you overclock it, but the Phenom will provide better multitasking and better performance in applications that are optimized for additional cores. The 512mb 4850 and 512mb GTS 250 will trade blows with each other all over the place (the 1 GB GTS 250 is more powerful than a 4850 in almost every scenario, though); you'll need to figure out which is more powerful for the games you're interested in.

You're right Deadboots. I have a 400W PSU that i have had for 5 years now LOL (Soyo Raptor w/face plate voltage inputs not in production anymore). I just recently upgraded to a 700W CoolMax and it rocks too. I would just suggest a 550W...but thats just a suggestion ^_^ 450W will do fine
