I ran Spybot Search and Destroy, which found Hit Box that it defined as spyware. At least one of the files found was a newegg cookie. The following are examples of what I found when googling hitbox. I suspect the truth lies somewhere in between these 2 descriptions. Should this be a concern?

Spyware scanners will find cookies with logged information, which Newegg does. Deleting this cookie will force Newegg to recreate it when you visit/log in.

Hitbox is mild advertisings piece of code and no big deal. Remove it.
What you should do is also download Ad-aware SE (free) and scan your machine again. It is always better to have more then one program since no single program will find all the spyware (even the best of the best find %80).

Actually, I use both and AdAware doesn't show it but Spybot does. I deleted it. I just hate any of this tracking stuff and disappointed newegg uses it

Its not "TRACKING" cookies, though its labeled as such.

What it is mostly is user preferences. Ya, many websites like people to be able to save settings, customer info, blah blah blah.

If you dont like it, turn off cookies and problem solved.

Problem is that turning off cookies will like screw up things I want to do on newegg because I'm sure there are some that are needed. I don't mind some cookies, e.g., those that remember preferences, it's the tracking cookies, e.g., track your movements on the site, but I guess it's something you have to live with

Humm.

From NewEgg:
Shopping cart problems generally occur due to one or more of the following reasons:
If you cannot add items to your shopping cart:

* The item you want to purchase is sold out.
* Your system clock is not current.
* There is a problem with your cookies (see below).

What is a cookie?
Cookies are tiny text files websites send to your browser which are stored on your computer so that a site can be customized based on your previous actions or visits to that website.

Newegg.com uses cookies to keep track of what you have in your shopping cart and to recognize you each time you visit our store. Cookies are harmless and cannot damage your computer nor do they contain personal or private information.

Dont worry about it. Turn them off if you dont trust new egg.

As long as they are not collecting any personal information I'm fine with them. I've spent too much money on newegg not to trust them 😀 I was just surprised Spybot showed it as spyware
