Howdy great peeps,

So after getting my H110 & installing it,
decided to do some OCing, the result is pretty nice!

Used in my setup:
CPU: I7 4790k @4.5Ghz - 1.204V
Cooling Paste: Arctic MX-4 (pea method)
CPU Cooler: H110 (stock fans, since they are quite decent, 100%)
Motherboard: ASRock Z97 Extreme4
PSU: EVGA SuperNova 850W 80+ Gold
GPU: x2 MSI GTX 970 Gaming 4G
SSD: Samsung 850 PRO 256GB
HDD: Samsung HD100IS 1TB
RAM: Corsair Vengeance 1600Mhz 8GB
Case: Graphite 760T

Testing method:
Prime95, Small FFTs
Disabled all power saving options in BIOS, throttling options and so on.
(Only kept temperature protection activated)

First tested 4.5Ghz on 1.199V, but after 2 hours testing it failed :(
So upped the voltage to 1.204V, which seems so far to be the sweet spot,
the temperatures did not exceed 68c so that is very satisfying!
(Only tested 30 minutes, will test for 6 hours more - the temperatures are amazing though)

Could potentially go higher, but a 0.5Ghz OC is good enough for me.
Post any thoughts & comments you may have!

Much greetings,
Mike

Nice overclock. I bet it will do 4.7 easily. But 4.5 at a lower voltage does seem like the sweet spot.

As for the cooler, I have both the H100i and H110.

I had to swap the fans on the H100i to a pair of SP120's to get rid of low RPM bearing noise.
H100i only beats the H110 when the fans are set high and loud.

If you want to try some really quiet 140mm fans with high static pressure for the H110, try some Phanteks 140mm PWM fans. I've been very impressed with them.

Being the lunatic that I am, I decided to go beyond the H100i and H110 is this:

I added a north bridge block and custom modded VRM...

hi,

I'm not the greatest specialist, but it's good to have at least someone to give some feedback ;)

Looking good indeed. With 4.5G at 1.20V you certainly don't have a bad CPU.

Temps are good, but corsair hydro series at full speed are quite noisy. Especially compared to for example my NH-D14 which is very quiet. With that cooler on my 5820K I have low to mid 60s max core temps during AIDA64 stress test @ 4.25G with 1.10V and that's a six core... (although at lower speed and lower voltage)

On the other hand I hear latest prime with small FTT is causing huge CPU power draw on haswell(-e) and seen some very respectable people advising not to use prime (or certainly not that way) anymore as it can cause damage to the CPU by sheer power draw. Those remarks seem to be specifically for haswell-e as these have 6/8 cores instead of 4, but seems to be backed up by the fact that I am reading only about 140-150W with 6cores and you are getting 160W with 4. Just to say it's not a real apples to apples comparison I made above...

Generally max core temps below 75 during stress testing are considered good for 24/7 usage, so you could even consider to go a tad higher to x46 with added Vcore although I would probably leave it at that.

Only thing left to say is... Have fun ;)

Howdy,

Well the H100i I used had VERY loud fans,
the H110 has 140MM fans, which means they are already quite a lot softer.

Noise does not bother me that much to be true,
I have a beep tone in my left ear - so I hear sounds all the time :p

Your CPU setup seems quite decent then.
Not bad at all!

Well yeah, I am using Prime95 26.6 (a old one)
the latest is indeed a bit... ugh..
Might increase it just a little bit, but I will let you know here!

Thanks for the feedback,
Mike

Hi mike,

Indeed h110 has 140mm but i did read some comments saying it was almost as loud as h100i. Good to know it's not. I was actually considering the h110, but went for the good old air cooler instead.

About my CPU, it seems indeed i got lucky with the silicon lottery (for once). I believe 4.25G for 1.10v is quite good although i'm not sure yet how good exactly and not even sure if its 'completely' stable like that as i only stressed it for like 20mins or so. Only got it for a week and just started OCing it. Will know more once i see how far it will go on 1.20v. Although it's not a dud CPU for sure :)

grtz

I added a north bridge block and custom modded VRM waterblock by Koolance. Assembled and tested over the past few weeks. So far it is utterly silent at 3' away (1m). I'm very pleased.

Interseting, After I deemed AIO coolers where not what I needed I actually seriously considered buying an alphacool set. Only changed my mind when I was at the store counter and went for the noctua. What scared me away was the maintenance and the water itself being near my expensive equipment. I know... I am a coward... One day though...

What I am curious about. What did it do with your temps? moving from H110 to the Alphacool set?
