"Microsoft is getting ready to launch Windows 8-specific peripherals that will make the tiled touch aspect a bit easier to navigate for those without actual touchscreens."

Print this out, stick it on the bottom of your screen, and you're good to go!

@ belardo sure talks a lot of tosh!

The Win 8 layout is no doubt good for a tablet/phone but not a desktop PC with Mouse+KB.

I can live with the tiles and actually use them at times but I would like the choice to use either or or both (meaning new tiles and old start menu).

They should have made 2 version or 1 version that detects tablet or PC during install and give you option.

[citation][nom]peteben[/nom]Don't worry, MS will have it all fixed... in Windows 9.[/citation] Many of us won't care. Well be migrated off to Mac OSX or Linux or chromeOS by then. If it blows up really bad, SP1 may come out in 3 months to fix all the crap they broke. Or they will spend the next 3 years raping their user base with it. The game plan is to kill windows, replace it with metro. Once I go Linux, I won't anymore.

[citation][nom]syrious1[/nom]listen, it takes a whole 0.01 seconds to load your desktop from either a button or winkey+D[/citation] why should I or anyone else have to do this. One of the nice things of win7 over xp is that you can start typing to log in. With xp, you had to click your name before typing. You think most people are going to learn any of these keyboard shortcuts??? LOL!!! I've shown clients over and over again the basic CTRL+V C X B I S F R Z keys, or at least the first three of those.

Microsoft has gone full retard, I have no confidence in them as a company, their management or their technical talent. This will be the first windows nobody pirates since windows 2.x.

Why would you force DESKTOP users to use a UI that's designed for the MOBILE space? Maybe nVidia and AMD should force LAPTOP users to use DESKTOP graphics cards and cpu's too?

[citation][nom]CaedenV[/nom]Um... $40 to upgrade to the pro version to add your computer to a domain? Better resource management that makes programs and games run faster? Better backup options? Better cloud support? Better support and segregation for multiple users on the same machine? Better support for one user over multiple machines? Better multi-screen support? More input options? Dramatically less CPU, HDD, GPU, and RAM use by the OS? More detailed (finally useful!) reporting on system resources within task manager? Better support for legacy software?Seriously, other than the replacement of the start menu with 'not Metro' (which you barely need to interact with, and actually is better than the start menu in some ways) win8 is far superior to win7 in every way.[/citation]

This +1. I like how there's folk that are like "I spend most of my time on the desktop". Doing what, exactly? Me, I need my OS to run my applications smoothly with minimal amount of resources. If Win 8 dose that batter then Win 7, then this is all that matters. My apps will still be my apps, regardless of how I launched them.

And yeah, just because RTM doesn't have the option, doesn't meant he option is dead for those that have some reason (though I cannot fathom what it may be) to see the desktop in a particular way - give it all of... a week... for a tweak to be released. Probably less then a week.

Let's see - forcing users to click one button. 1 second lost. Time saved through better use of hardware in JUST the loading times for other applications (you know, the things hat people ACTUALLY use their computers for - seems like half the people here use their PC just to look at their OS desktop /smh) = 5 seconds in the first 20 minutes of use (very conservative estimate).

Yep, makes sense. I'll forgo the massive improvement in resource management to avoid clicking a button. I'm logical!

Blah blah ~~ win8 is far superior to win7 in every way.[/citation] windows 8 isn't worth $1. Since when has ms had a Pro upgrade that was under $140?? Games and pro won't run faster... Already have an i5? Then you already have speed. The other improvents, I call bull. Your opinion is just that, an opinion. Win8 is not a worthy replacement of windows7. It's about time for most of us to move on past Microsoft.

Hasn't Microsoft been down this road before? Where they were absolutely sure they knew what was best and what we wanted, only to then always (!) admit defeat and have to spend more funds in damage control than the money they actually made from their blunder? I do not want, in any shape or form, a OS on my DESKTOP COMPUTER that feels, or even hints, at the mobile sector. Not a hint! And I don't doubt that W8 is an improvement in some ways, I understand that - but why make it a priority to push this down our throats? Couldn't Microsoft have implemented a core-split between mobile and desktop implementation, say, when the OS is being installed, after asking what language to install, it would also ask if we want the mobile tuned or the desktop tuned version.

Wow, Toms is a bunch of screaming babies.

What makes you think Windows 9 won't feature Metro? What makes you think MacOS or Linux will be better for games? There not. I haven't seem more asinine, retarded, and downright foolish complaining then this.

How fucking hard is it to take .000001 second to get to the desktop? How hard is it to download a UI mod or put it into Desktop Mode? I forgot, none of you have actually bothered to use Windows 8, because you look at "Metro" and say "eww, turn off".

For Christ's sake, it's not like your going to spend a year staring at the home window. Windows 8 will be faster, boot quicker, and use less resources then 7. I thought Tom's was full of PC gamers? You guys are going to let some UI stop you from higher FPS? Gosh, and to think you idiots actually overclock your things no problem.

Y'all have fun on Linux and MacOS with poor driver support, having to have to wait to get your games coded for them, and other things. Linux is a good OS, just not for gaming.

I'm with ya minekraft. I just don't undertand the I hate the UI so the OS is terrble argument. It really boggles my mind. Why wouldn't everyone want an OS that squeezes the most out of your (much more expensive and more often replaced) hardware? It am truly baffled.

I wonder if Microsoft just has some incredible insight and wisdom about the future to know that we'll all hate this now, but 3 years from now when desktops and laptops are made completely obsolete due to lack of sales, we all start to love it because all computers are slate devices and all-in-ones with touchscreens. Then we'll all look back and say, "hey, they knew what they were doing!". Or it flops completely as we all clutch our keyboards and mice for dear life, running W7 and other OS's.

Going to go outside and get some fresh air. Then get back to running my hardware efficiently with win 8. Cheers all!

I'm not a huge Win8 hater, but it seems like Mircrosoft is making a much bigger effort than usual to burn the bridges to past OS's.
In the past it's always been fairly easy to get the new version looking more like the old. My dad still sets Windows 7 up to look like Windows 2000Pro/98, it still has some new features but it's pretty similar look and feel.

My opinion is they are hurting themselves by forcing the change with an iron fist, why not let people have their workarounds, eventually people will grow accustomed and not really bother to apply them, but not everyone want's to go cold turkey, so the alternative is not going at all.

I have a hard time taking anyone seriously that does not know the difference between there and they're.
