[citation][nom]mcnuggetofdeath[/nom]WTF blizzard. I seldom play starcraft but its a huge staple at the monthly LANs I host with my friends. I was genuinely excited for this release until I heard that it was going to be a 3 part series, this only makes me dislike Blizzard more. Could they be less subtle in pointing out that all they want is money? I shouldnt have to use your servers just so i can see ads from your sponsors. If the same thing happens with Diablo 3, I assure you i will never buy another thing from Blizzard.[/citation]

Talk is cheap buddy, everyone and their brother knows when release day comes you'll be running to the nearest game store with your wallet out and ready to go.
And it should be fairly obvious why LAN play is fading out. Pirating. Can't get on Bnet without a valid key amiright? Same for Diablo III. I actually think its good they are doing it this way. Also doesn't your "LAN Party" area have some type of broadband?

I played StarCraft II at Blizzcon ON a LAN... If they take OUT the support that they already put IN, that would make no sense. Seriously, this article can't be serious.

[citation][nom]baov[/nom]Just FUCK YOU blizzard. I was gonna buy it but now looks like i'm gonna pirate it cause you don't deserve my money.[/citation]

Have fun in single player only mode KTHXBYE!

[citation][nom]seeem[/nom]stradic have you played on bnet much? Actually have you played on any online gaming net (Xbox Live, PSN, etc.)?They all share one thing: LAG. And in games where split-second movements make the difference LAG is intolerable. Heck even people with FiOS still have lag issues.Imagine trying to play COD 4 when everyone is moving 50 feet in one go.Starcraft may not be as fast as shooters, but tell me its not a problem when your entire force is wiped out because it lagged for a good 10 seconds which has happened.[/citation]

OK, there's a major misunderstanding here on your part. Let's use your xbox live example. If 10 of my friends all brought their xboxes over, plugged into a router (wirelessly or with an extra hub or whatever) and connected to xbox live to play a game together, there would be no lag. Why? Because you're on the same LAN. You just need xbox live to create the game. Then, once the game starts, you basically all have a connection to each other which is routed one hop via the gateway/router. No lag. If there is, it's the router's fault and you would have it anyway if the game supported LAN play.

The reason you experience lag on xbox live is because you're traveling over many switches to make that direct connection. Rarely do you ever play with someone on the same network.

And if you experience lag on FiOS, then it's probably the person on the other end.

Again, this bitchiness about the lack of LAN play is based on ignorance and a bunch of whiny, over-privileged bitches that just want to get their way.

Seriously LAN was the WHOLE point of SC2. I don't care if they make us activate the game online before they make LAN work as long as I can play the game at LANs. Playing over the net is all good. But its the excitment of creaming your buddys sitting in the same room as you that make the game fun.

Then talking about there mistakes etc after the game. Thats why I loved Starcraft. New Zealand broadband is way to crap to do that over the net. I think me and my mates will stick with Command and Conquer 3 now 🙁 since SC2 will have no LAN ;(.

I'm still so gutted about Blizzard ruining the game I have waited so many years for.

It's my money I'm spending... don't I have a say as to what part I'd miss the most? Seems fair to me, don't you think?

Weekly LAN parties were the sole reason we were all interested in StarCraft 2. None of us have any want to play on Battle.net with its confounding rules regarding IPs and seemingly random BAN system with no recourse.

Starcraft 2 just went from a game we all want to buy, to a game that we have no reason to buy.

[wtf.]Starcraft was a staple of LAN parties. What are they thinking? Total crap Blizzard.[/wtf]
The sad thing is every Starcraft fan will buy it anyway. This is stupid though. The netcode is all there. Every game with multiplayer under the sun has been released with LAN, but not the most hyped game ever. oh no. we couldn't have that, could we?

Screw you blizzard. The Diablo 1 and Starcraft days are over.

Is the BNet part just to authenticate and the rest of the game will be played by standard P2P connections?

This means at home your computers would Auth to BNet and then the games would start and you would be playing on your LAN connection.

[citation][nom]Jeats[/nom]?This means at home your computers would Auth to BNet and then the games would start and you would be playing on your LAN connection.[/citation]

Ex--freakin--actly, LAN technically will still be available in terms of what LAN is (A LOCAL area network), one is still being established. You now have to authenticate (via Battle.NET) in order to create the LAN. Someone said that Battle.NET would not allow more than one connection from the same IP. I know thats not true for Battle.NET 1.0, if its true in 2.0 then sure, thats a real deal-breaker (but I'm almost positive its not).

Anyway! Is it really that big a deal? I mean come on, who honestly doesn't have an internet connection nowadays, obviously EVERYONE here does, and when you go to a friends house for a LAN, surely he would have a connection too?

Just to extend on the above: The only issue I can potentially see here is LAN setup time. Anyone who's been to a couple of LAN's with different people, knows that the longest part of the LAN, besides the gaming, is the setup! Getting peoples firewalls turned off or rules put in, putting a PCI network card in the poor noob's PC whose first LAN it is, making sure everyone can ping each other, if there's wireless, sorting out passwords etc etc etc. So yes, having to worry about getting everyone sharing a network connection could add to the painful setup time, although with most DSL installations being router based noways, its a simple matter of cable plug and play and just make sure you have IP's set to be automatically retrieved from the built-in DHCP server on the router.

[citation][nom]joshthor[/nom]i can see consoles. rts' on a console is like a race horse with 3 legs. no lan is dumb though.[/citation]
for the most part I would agree but it can be done and it can be done RIGHT. Halo Wars is actually very fun and amazingly a good rts. I was actually quite surprised by how it played. just from playing the demo I had to purchase it. of course Ensemble Studios usually does know how to do rts. *stupid microsoft* I will admit it is different but it just feels right for a console rts (it's not perfect of course but it's still a very good rts in my opinion). hard to explain if you have not tried it.

[citation][nom]acoote[/nom]BUT Really, getting an internet connection shouldn't be a problem, even at a LAN party (just have your buddy hosting the party, share his)...Using the example of playing a WC3 game on Battle.net. My friends and I used to try this out, and would all connect to our battle.net accounts. I would host a game and they would all join.[/citation]
[citation][nom]chainreaction[/nom]I can't even play SC2 accross the net lan gaming. Bnet doesn't let multiple computers on to bnet with the same IP...[/citation]
someone's wrong.

I have no idea on Battle.NET but I know I had this problem playing AOE II/AOE II AOC. the zone.com had the exact same issue the second commentor mentioned. more than one computer from the same IP could not connect in-game. the room setup and everything but after launch only the first computer to make it could play. I got a second IP for that very reason at the time.
[citation][nom]stradric[/nom]1) If you are hosting LAN parties and plugging into a router, well, plug the router into the internet and there's your connection to battle.net...2)I bet you're all over-privileged white kids too -- used to getting your way. Get over it.[/citation]
1)do you know that works for sure? at least one person contradicted that.
2)racist much?

I actually play in bnet.
I play diablo 2 the hardcore way (When your char dies it really die and you lost everything) and i can tell you people i just lost a few chars because bnet was lagging, it really sux btw i don't like star craft and I hope they do a great job with D3.

I suspect LAN support will be an add-on that won't be free of charge. This is just a way of generating more revenue.

like everything in,life, whats goes up MUST come down !!!
It sounds like its time for Bliz to come down !!!

[citation][nom]p_haze420[/nom]How can you, blizzard not add Lan? Look at Korea, they play lan party almost everyday. Seriously, It will kill your sales greatly. How can you be that stupid, blizzard. You made millions of dollars from WoW and you want more? Fucking greedy. On other hand, the mission is going be 30+ mission per class. Starcraft has 30 missions total. So that very reasonable.[/citation]

*Sigh*. Do you know how many people who play LAN actually BUY the game? Everyone I see playing LAN had a pirated copy, so NO it will not kill their sales because people who play with a pirated copy, well, they don't buy the game to begin with.

blizard only exists because we bought half the copies you have put on the market. now this is how you treat us back? i swear I will never buy a legal copies of blizzard game ever again. and you know what i'm going to download illegal copies and distribute within my circle of friends so that they dont make the same mistake. you shouldn't think you can take us for granted

A lot of players seem to forget that thousands of people go to work 9-5 and make video games. Do you want them to get paid or not? Do you want a Starcraft 3 in the future? You can't say Blizzard is trying to fleece their customers, not with all the strong RTS competition out there. They do not have monopoly power. Economically, it will be IMPOSSIBLE for them to fleece their customers, so stop worrying about it.
