Question No POST, nothing, but the PSU shows fine with multimeter ?

Ok so long story short, it’s my old build:

Mobo: MSI X470 Gaming Plus
CPU: Ryzen 2700X
GPU: Nvidia GTX 1060 6GB
RAM: 2 x 32GB DDR4 Corsair Vengeance (purchased about a year ago)
PSU: EVGA 600w Bronze 80 Plus (put back in after I built new rig)

Worked like a charm for many years, no issues, but after bringing it out of retirement for the kid it got a few weeks or so before I guess from what he says it just randomly shut off. No power to anything when you hit the power button. I’ve tried jumping the 2 prongs on mobo to start it and nothing. I’ve pulled the 24 pin connecter and jumped it and then the psu comes on and at the time the case fans were still plugged in and they kicked on. Except the water pump and cpu fans didn’t. I assume they are powered through the 24 pin connecter regardless?

I did a multimeter test on the 24-pin and all of them checked out regarding the voltage they're supposed to get. I’ve reset CMOS multiple times with cmos reset button and leaving battery out for a long time. I get not a single ez debug LED to light up..

I’m leaning towards mobo saying I’m tired and 7 years old, I’m done. Is it safe to put power to the mobo with no cpu in the cpu socket to see if I get a cpu debug led to come on? I’ve done the minimal components installed with no luck. If neither of the debug lights come on for ram or cpu with neither installed and power to mobo is it safe to say it’s the mobo? Thanks for your time

You can't test the PSU under load like that. Try swapping out the PSU.

I would suggest independently testing the other components to rule out what could be wrong. Strong emphasis on graphics card.

The cooler/AIO is probably of an age that it could be suspect. Do you have a half-middling tower cooler or Spire to spare for testing? Where I doubt this would cause it not to boot it may have been or could be a factor.

Test CMOS battery.

Right, but is that a common thing though? Last time I thought it was psu I bought a new one and turned out to be mobo. I’ll just try another psu

Will it not boot with a dead cmos battery at all? I might have the old cooler that came with Ryzen but I bought the cooler back in 21 so it’s aged but not as old as cpu/mobo

Will a Ryzen 2700 (obviously no integrated graphics) not boot at all without a graphics card in it?
I thought I would get a gpu debug light to come on at least ?

Ay what a long time in storage can simply drain the cmos battery. They can play dead if it's flat.

Looking in your manual for a quick look does not seem to indicate there is an LED debug. I don't see anything about a motherboard speaker either, but just may be missing it.

It does appear there is a jumper (pg40) that may need to be relocated to one pin to allow boot, if that has been tampered with.

Even if the motherboard battery is dead, it will still boot if everything else works. Date, time, and previous settings would set to default.

I’ll look at page 40 and check battery just in case and try a new psu. Appreciate the quick responses and help a lot. If you look at page 21 of manual under special features you’ll see ez debug LED which I can promise it has 4 of.

Ok well it’s hard to say I’ve seen posts of people saying cmos battery being shot it wouldn’t do anything but google says an msi x470 gaming plus should boot even without a battery in it so best to just verify the battery is healthy and good and check it off the list

well my ole 990 fx mobo did not boot with a flat cmos battery and made me think it was dead every coupla years. I haven't tried to boot it with a b550 and no cmos battery. All I remember is probly an amd k6-500 board booting without a cmos or an old intel lx or bx mobo. and after than the rest from then 'til now have not booted without a cmos battery. for a $1 for a new one why quibble

What I meant by do nothing in my previous post I meant like the computer reacts to nothing when trying to turn on so essentially like trying to turn on a computer unplugged from the wall so I cant and won’t declare the cmos isn’t the problem.

yes that's the same symptom that my 'post lx-bx' pentium 2 era systems displayed in the absence of cmos power.

Starting a bit from scratch her. According to google search, that mobo was released in 2019 - have you had it this long?

A 6 yr modo isn't very old, but for a gaming mobo it very vell is old since it typical experiences much more temperature variations during its life time compared to say an office computer.

So, if that is not far off from the actual age, I'd say there is an equal chance for the failure to be located in the mobo as well.

Also as earlier mentioned, the only way to test is to try to replace the PSU with a known good one. Measuring voltage using a regular multimeter typically won't reveal anything because any voltage drops have a duration of only a few ms and the multimeter won't pick that up.

As said, you need to load the power supply to properly test it. Since the PC has been sitting for x amount of time, cheap electrolytic capacitors dry out over time. But the truth be known. PC's a shotgunned not trouble shot for issues. Since I build PC's as a hobby, keeping spare parts is a good idea. At least a known good power supply.
