If you get the long beeps, add a stick of RAM. Boot. The beep pattern should change to one long and two or three short beeps. Silence indicates that the RAM is shorting out the PSU (very rare). Long single beeps indicates that the BIOS does not recognize the presence of the RAM.

copied the above from the new build checklist, this is the prob I'm having, silence when memory is installed.

MB: ASUS P5Q-E
Ram : nvidia SLI ready, OCZ high performance 2g stick (voltage 5-4-4@2.1v) part number OCZ2N800SR4GK

Mother board
wont post, show video, or beep when memory is installed. Verified memory works in different computer as well does the video card, though im not even hooking that up while testing.

I am assuming that the bios is not set to the correct voltage the ram needs... but im guessing. Have not gotten ahold of a different stick of DDR2 to test in my machine, thinking of buying that 512 stick shown in a link in the new build checklist thread to test.

Anybody able to offer any advise? any is welcome.

You need to have a case or motherboard speaker for beeps to occur, if you don't have one then you won't hear the beeps even if the MB is sending the signal. Will the MB beep when there is nothing installed, just MB and CPU power connectors?

That's a good question from xthekids.
I think its safe to say the high performance memory with 2.1volts is the problem. A lot of motherboards will by default apply 1.8 volts for ddr2 memory. You say you verified the ram works by sticking it in another pc. Why not borrow a stick from this other pc so you can get in the bios and change the ram voltage?

Yes, MB speaker is plugged in and i do get the beep error when no memory at all is installed. reason i didn't get the memory to switch it over is for 2 reasons. 1, when i tested it i only brought my memory, motherboard, and graphics card to my fathers that lives hour and a half away ( hes a tech), and 2 because he only had 2 sticks, and he didn't wanna take the risk of possibly putting a stick of his ram in the MB if that was the problem, as his computer also runs his mythTV and such 😛.

anyway prob gunna get that stick of ram i saw on the other post for like 9 bucks and see if that can start it up to change the settings. any info still welcome though.

Is this a new motherboard you've never used?

Do you have the 8-pin PSU power cable plugged in for your CPU?

You should try booting with only the CPU, CPU HSF, Power Supply connections and RAM installed. Then add parts.

This board supports 2.1V. Since your RAM has also been tested elsewhere I doubt it's a RAM issue.

You can also contact Asus if you get stuck.

*For RAM, your motherboard manual will specify which slots to use for a single stick, 2 sticks, or 4 sticks. Troubleshoot with one stick which is likely only one of the 4 slots. Choosing the others is a waste of time as they won't work.

If he is getting the long single beeps, his CPU is working, indicating that the 8 pin cable is connected.

And it still could be a RAM issue. The board may support 2.1 volt RAM, but the default motherboard setting is 1.8 volts. And apparently the RAM is not working at 1.8 volts.

ok, just an update 😛 I recieved the new memory today to test it to no avail. Same problem, memory installed, fans running, no video, no post.

Tried all 4 slots, tried resetting bios, im lost now... any ideas?
