Hello,
I have a relatively new machine running XP Pro (P4 2.8G, Asus P4P800
motherboard).
For some strange reason, sound only comes from one speaker. I've tested both
the onboard Soundmax sound card and a Creative PCI sound card.
All settings appear to be correct (inlcuding the balance....).
Any ideas?
Thanks

Did you disable the on-board audio before trying the PCI
card, and vice-versa? Have you tried headphones? If the
answer to both questions is "yes" and only one channel
works on the headphones, you must have a software problem.
If headphones work OK from both sources, then you have
a problem with the speakers themselves.

What kind of speakers do you have? If you have a common 1 pin PC speaker,
you may be trying to use the wrong jack in the sound card.

Do the speakers work on a different system?

I have an old pair of Yamaha speakers. Internal Amplifier.
The connections are correct.

I have an old pair of Yamaha speakers. Internal Amplifier.
The connections are correct.

The speakers work on other systems, and other speakers have the same problem
on this system.

Sounds like a bad input. Try wiggling the 1/8" jack around and see if
it changes to both speakers in certain positions. I get this sometimes
with my headphones on my 1/4" jack 🙁

Have you gone to control panel and checked "sounds and audio devices"? There
may be an answer in there. My system is different to yours, so I can't tell
you exactly what to look for. Explore the possibilities.

I have this exact same board with a PCI Sound Blaster Audigy 2 Platinum.
No conflicts with leaving the onboard sound enabled, but I would
recommend disabling it in the BIOS. Also, make sure you don't have the
speakers plugged into the digital output only or something like that. I
would test the speakers as well as headphones in every input with an MP3
running on my computer to make sure sound will come out. You said
neither the onboard nor the PCI sound card provided sound out to both
speakers. I would physically check the speakers and their jacks. You
can try cleaning the jacks and reconnecting them. Also, try twisting
them around a bit in the sockets to see if any sound comes out.

Also, does the speaker jack have one or two grooves in the middle of it?

Checked.
Could it be related to the board?

Did you set up the speakers in Control Panel> Sounds and Audio? Many
speaker settings on the Volume page. Select the type of speakers under
Advanced. A default install of XP sets this up very conservatively and the
user should adjust it.

THis post is so old, I'm sure you have teh problem fixed by now. But...I had
a similar problem. It was software related. I uninstalled all, and I mean
ALL, the audio software I had, rebooted, reinstalled, and BAM...worked fine.
Hope your problem is, or will be, fixed soon.

I have a similar problem with my Dell Optiplex with WinXP Pro SP2 and
Turtle Beach Santa cruz sound card. I think the problems started after
SP2, but I can't be sure.

Often, I'll get very low volume & static from my left speaker which
runs through a receiver/amplifer. All other rec inputs work OK with
this speaker.

I found a strange way to correct it (temporary) by opening sounds in
control panel & playing a fairly loud file like chord. Sometimes this
will force the "connection", and the sound will be OK for minutes to
hours.

Sometimes, the computer will just reboot, & MS crash analysis will
call it a driver or RAM problem. I have the latest drivers for Turtle
Beach, and I'm about to rip the card out & return to the MB sound chip
(yes, it's turned off in BIOS).

Yes, I've done all the plug/cable twisting & swapping with no avail.

Thanks for listening.

Richard
