I installed a new motherboard recently but I cant seem to get the sound to work there is a cross next to the speaker icon and when I go on to playback devices it says there is nothing plugged in but there is. I have installed the correct drivers so what could be the problem?

You're sure you installed the Realtek Audio driver? Open the Realtek console and see if it shows anything amiss. Also, be sure you have the device 'enabled' in windows. Apparently it is enabled in BIOS or Windows would see it.

Actually, I meant set as the default in Sound/Playback. Try your headphones to see if they work with the front jack. Also, make sure your speakers are plugged into the correct color jack on the back of the MB. Should be the green jack, not the blue. Sometimes they look alike.

It wont let me set as default, and yes I have tried on both the front and back jacks, in the correct colour.

Open Device Manager and see if there are any yellow flags present. If all is well there, go to Control Panel/Programs and uninstall the Realtek audio driver. Re-boot and see if Windows will load a generic driver for the audio. If it does, try the speakers/headphones.

If Win doesn't spot the device and load the generic driver, go to Win Updates and have it check for updates (to see if it finds a driver).

If your on-board sound chip was dead, I wouldn't think the Realtek driver would have completed its install.

I did everything you said and now there is no longer a red cross next to the speaker but I still have no sound. On playback devices it has several HDMI digital output devices even though I am not using HDMI. The headphones are still listed as not being plugged in.

What kind of speakers are you using? Are they connected to the single green jack at the back of the MB? Remove your headphones and open the Realtek Control Panel. Click on the speaker icon in the bottom/right corner of the screen and be sure the vol is turned up. Check to see if your speakers have a volume control to turn up or a swotich to turn ON. You could also try your speakers on a different PC (laptop?) to see if they even work.

Im actually using earphones which I have tested on other devices and yes they are connected to the single green jack at the beack of the MB. The volume is up on both but the volume on the PC is for HDMI digital output device not the earphones, when I go onto playback devices it is listed as not plugged in so I cant set it as default device

I just managed to fix the problem. After doing some playing around in the realtek sound manager and there was an option to disable front jack. I clicked this, thinking I might get sound on the back panel but I actually have sound on the front panel 😀 .

So, thx for all the help :hello:

No its really weird.

Also i seem to be getting a lot of white noise, im thinking maybe the wire connecting the audio jacks to the motherboard was not pushed in correctly when I put in the new motherboard

Be sure you're using the HD audio and not the AC97. You are using the correct driver, yes?
If there's no sound on the rear jack and the only way you can get sound on the front jack is by "disabling front jack", I would have to think the sound chip on the board is defective. It might be best to RMA the board.
