No volumes on an external hard drive

Hi. I think I've done a silly thing, and managed to wipe everything,
completely everything, from an external hard drive I've got. That was
actually the plan, but now when I plug it in it doesn't appear in 'My
computer'. The computer is recognising it because the 'Safely remove
hardware' icon appears, and if I go onto the Device Manager it is listed
under Hard Drives. Double-clicking to see the details tells me that it's
working properly, but I notice the Volumes tab has no information in any of
the headings. I've tried populating, which introduces information into all
the headings but doesn't actually produce a new volume. When I click 'OK'
then come back in, it's all gone again.
I don't know a lot about volumes and so on, but I guess I've wiped anything
the computer might need to actually show the physical presence of the drive.
How do I get it back? Help!

If you don't have a formatted partition on the external drive the partition
will not have a letter designation. Create a partition and format the same.
Then you will be able to see it in Windows Explorer and you will also be
able to use it.

Thanks Richard, I've learnt a little more about computers. That all worked a
treat.
