Hi, I needed some help/advice. I brought a WD blue 1tb HDD new for my new computer, on this I planned to store my games, music and photos. 5 months on the HDD was making a noise, I ignored this and carried on. About a week later the squeaking noise became more frequent and I called WD. They sent me a replacement HDD, this HDD was recertified and when I installed it and the noise continued. I phoned WD again and they sent me another recertified replacement HDD. Again the noises continues while I play games or listen to music. Please could someone help me.
Thanks

Do you have other drives that you can attach to your system and install a game on them? If not, you can just borrow from somebody. That way, you will see whether something in your system is causing this.
Sometimes, the PSU could cause weird noises. Unfortunately, the easiest way to test your your PSU is to borrow one and put it in your system.

Are you certain it is the hard drive making the noise? Try booting the PC without the hard drive plugged in. It could be a wire hitting a fan or a number of other causes.

If you are certain it is the hard drive (it only happens when the drive is in use, etc.), the noise may be vibration in the case that is amplified by the hard drive. Do you have rubber or some sort of padding between the hard drive and the mount?

Hi. I am certain it is the hard drive and the is a piece of rubber between the hard drive and the bracket. thanks

Hi there usata-bob,

So all the three drive are making squeaking noises(not the normal spinning one)?
Have you tried something simple as just attaching the drive to another SATA port with different cables? If not, you can try that. Also, if it is a secondary drive, you can try attaching it to another system as well.
Also, I would advise you to test it with WD's Data Lifeguard Diagnostic tool in order to check its health status: http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=EGRmD7

Keep me posted on this :)

Hi. I changed the cable and the squeak was not as frequent as before, ( the bleeps were how they were when this problem started)

this is the test result of the drive. Thanks

According to the results, the drive should be healthy.
You can try changing the other cable as well(in case you change the SATA one, try changing/swapping the power one as well). Do you have other HDDs? If you do, just swap the cables and see what happens.
Attaching the drive to another port will not hurt as well.

Cheers,

Hi. I got a HDD and played a game on it. It was silent, what is the next step? thanks

I assume you have installed the HDD(the one you played a game on) on another SATA port with different cables. Try connecting your problematic drive on the same port with the same cables. The last thing you can do is to install the HDD on another machine. It is really unusual for three different HDDs to have the same problem. 🙁
If the issue persists, you I guess you should contact WD's Support either by e-mail or phone and tell them about all the troubleshooting steps you've performed.
