I was looking at newegg's page debating if 329.99 was worth it for evga's new 780i motherboard. I hit refresh because people were talking about price increases at peak hours. I was greeted with a nice out of stock message and an eta of 28th of December. I looked around as best I could for other vendors but everyone seems to be dry. If anyone knows something I don't could you please help me out. Now that it is out of stock I got to have it.. haha :)

Consider yourself lucky; you just saved $329.99. I'm not convinced that nvidia chipsets are worth it. Too many posts from dissatisfied folks. At the very least, I would wait awhile for the bugs to get worked out.

Since I missed out on picking up the new Evga 780i in a timely fashion I have decided to get an Evga 680i and step up once the newer boards are back in stock and reasonably bug free. I have noticed several different version of the 680i and have been unable to find a place that explains the reasons for the division. Could anyone help me out?

I'm kind of in the same boat you are. I'm debating between the 680i and the 780i and after seen that price tag. Just dont think its worth it. But we'll see what happens.

780i boards aren't worth it//it's not even a new chipset..same chipset as the 680i but with gen 2 pci-e support..and that's worth nothing so far.

It isn't a big deal money wise and I can always "step up" if something better comes along.

P.S. If anyone responds with "if you can afford that then blah blah blah" just don't bother. We all know how you feel... go post in that thread about the kid with 4000 dollars, no common sense, and a unstoppable need to put two 8800 Ultras in his system.

I thought the 780i boards were supposed to help SLI performance scale better?

in theory that's supposed to be because of PCI-E 2..but in theory SLI gives you 2x the performance of a card which we know is complete bull.
So for now they give you absolutely nothing.

Ok... what you need to know. Right now, there is a promotion going on with EVGA that if you own a 680i motherboard, you can upgrade to the 780i for $80 (This includes hipping and handling). I have no idea if that is cost efficient or what. http://www.evga.com/680iupgrade/

This promotion could also be causing the slow flow of 780i motherboards. As they make them, they have to send them to the users who have preorder them through the promotion.

o1die - Why on earth would people complain if nothing was wrong with their board?. You normally only hear the negative things about products but rarely hear the good things. From all the reviews that I have read about the 680i chipset, they all said it is a rock solid chipset. I would only assume that this carries over to the 780i chipset. The only real differences between the two are the support for PCIe 2.0 and the ability to run any 45nm quad line from Intel. Not to mention that it is PCIe 2.0 x3 all x16 slots.

Actually only 2 of the PCI-E 16 slots are 2.0 3rd one is 1.1 I think. This is from a number of reviews that I have read. Not that it really matters. As for me I am still up in the air as to weather I should upgrade my 680i board to the 780i for $80. I'm just not sure that for the minor changes that it is worth it. Oh decisions decisions... :pt1cable:

Thats a bit stupid considering the 780i was meant to be for Tri-SLI ... now we cant run 3 cards at PCI-e2.0 speeds when they come out!

Nope..they're 3 x x16 lanes...
All 680i boards should have them. Nvidia have already 3 8800gtx ultra's running on 3 x16 lanes.
Makes no sense to have the 3rd card running in a x8 lane. You're not getting the full benefit of the card. If you look at the specs for the 8800GTS/GTX it specifically said that the card needed an x16 lane to run.
I know mine one anyway has 3 x 16 lanes.

Dont know where you get your info from but i got this straight out of the text book

"NVIDIA nForce 680i | 3-way SLI | 2 x16 | 16, 16, 8, 1, 1, 1, 1, 1, 1"

http://www.nvidia.com/docs/IO/35382/LC_nForce_INTEL_Dec07_Screen.pdf

and considering there is only 46 lanes available on the 680i... there isnt enough physical lanes to do 16x16x16 = 48 lanes minimum
