Hello

First time building a computer and I think I've made a mistake with the psu.

I have an msi gaming edition gtx 770, which has 2 x 8 pin connectors on, however the psu i'm using is a corsair cx500m, which only has one slot labelled pcie (6pin). It has an additional 3 slots, one is an 8 pin cpu slot, one a 6 pin periphial slot and one a 6 pin sata, there are no others at all.

I've done a lot of reading but didn't understand the answers I've found on the net so far... My question is, do I actually need 2 x pcie slots on the psu, or can i use a lead that has on 6 hole connector for the pcie slot in my psu and two 8 pin connectors on the other end for the gpu?

Thanks in advance.

Their are more than one plug on the cable it's self they split into two for example the 6 pin cable splits into one 1x 6pin and 1x 8 pin (that can turn into a 6pin) then you also get a 8 pin cable that splits into a 1x 8pin and 1x 6pin and you also get a 4 pin connector on the supplied sata cable and you get another 6 pin on the 24 pin connector so what I'm saying is your fine there is nothing to worry about when you receive the item you will see what I mean and in answer to you question yes.

Your question is really a power supply question, not a PCIe slot question. It looks like that power supply only came with one 8 pin and one 6 pin graphics card support. Maybe somebody that has that power supply can confirm.

Worst case, you will need a new power supply before you can play with your new graphics card.

Thank you for your answers so far. I guess this means a psu with just the one pcie slot is sufficient to run a gpu with 2 power connectors on it?

The closest match I have amongst the cables supplied with the psu is one that has a single 8 slot plug one end and two 6 + 2 slot plugs the other. Obviously I can fit the 6 + 2 plugs into the gpu just fine, but the 8 slot at the other end is too large to fit into the 6 slot pcie slot.

Going from what you've told me, I assume that cable would actually work fine if only the 8 slot was a 6? Or indeed if the 8 slot end had 2 connectors, rather than just the one (so I could plug it in the other way around).

Thanks again

All, I manged to get things working fine now. In my inexperience, I didn't realise that connectors marked pcie & cpu were both compatible with the gpu. Thanks for your help.
