In less than 6 months after the release of W8, Notch will buckle down and certify. I'm calling it. It's humorous that he talks of open platforms and yet he released MC on Appstore and XBL the first change he got, which are the definition of closed platforms. W8 will still be open

Care to elaborate or have you just got hold of your mommy's laptop while she isn't looking?

I don't get the big deal, I don't see Microsoft making it so that you cannot install applications you download or buy from another source on their platform. The store is just a reaction to the market, people are coming to expect that machines are going to give instant access to software via a store interface (ala Mobile phones). Don't get me wrong, I get why Steam and other "distributors" don't like this, because it gives Microsoft an advantage in the market to sell software directly rather than via 3rd party applications. This is bad for the distributor's, but not necessarily bad for the developers/publishers. It might make their products more accessible to customers.

Lastly, just like on Android, you can have more than one software distributor, Google and Amazon have application stores that live side by side .. so why can't Windows Live and Steam?

That would mean that Valve has more competition and they don't like having to compete for their customer's money. That's the only explanation that I can think of for why Valve and other gaming distributors are complaining.

WINDOWS R8PE Strikes Again!

Most people feel WINDOWS H8TE!

FIX:
- remove metro
- reinstate the skin from WIn8 8440 (not the ugly thing we see today)
- Make Metro Launcher (if the user wants it) on the desktop as a LEFT-SIDE panel that is always there (looks like WP7 but longer) so the LIVE TILES actually make sense.
- Kill the charms (again user option) - THEY SUCK ASS!
- Return the Start menu and UN-HIDE the hidden Start Button (dumb shit idea on that one MS)
"Okay okay, the Start button is there, but its a tiny sliver - hidden from view- they will love it!"

Thing is, I'm buying a Win7OEM for my upcoming PC.... So I won't be replacing it with Win8 anytime soon *IF IT WAS FIXED!*.

Under the hood, WIn8 rocks.

[citation][nom]daglesj[/nom]How to configure Windows 8 for whiners -~~ blah blah~~ I'm disappointed that more just disregard it in a herd-outrage mass frenzy. Quite immature really.[/citation]
1 - Why the hell should I or anyone else have to FIX Windows 8?! The charms work like shit.
2 - The whole UI experience is a piece of shit. Metro apps on task bar? Windows Apps on Task-switcher? No and No. Stupid useless live-tiles that you don't ever see.
3 - Immature? As long as we have the RIGHT to voice our opinion on the OS monopoly OS... we WILL BITCH when MS Fracks up.

Its my right to spend $140 for another WIn7 OEM license than $40 to get the Win8 license. Because that is WHAT I'm doing.

Win8 isn't even worth pirating. I wouldn't put it on my computer for $1.

[citation][nom]LORD_ORION[/nom]This is a great time to mention PC-BSDhttp://www.pcbsd.org/No need to worry if MS becomes like Apple, there is always an escape...[/citation]

OSX is also based on FreeBSD IIRC. Funny that you're recommending another OS based on it 😗

well in the end, both Linux and OSX are unix based(as bsd is a unix based OS), apple just had their own development team heavily modify unix to its own OS and put a price on it.

On the topic of operating systems, I for one personally enjoy the possible chance in a shift of market. If more of the consumers end up using OS's like linux(after work has been put into it), creating a usable gaming platform that's unix based(most likely linux as it is free) would ease the cost that a user gets when they need to buy windows.

[citation][nom]Darkerson[/nom]Im more concerned that if the app store takes off in Windows 8, that down the road in later versions of Windows, they really do start to try and lock everyone out that refuses to use the store. Thats what has me worried.[/citation]
This is what I am concerned about as well. Having an app store is fine as long as I can still install software the current way. Its just that because M$ will be taking a cut from the store, they have an incentive to try and get people to use it. This will either to at best poor support for non-app store software install issues (related to the OS) or at worst M$ going the Apple direction of completely locking down the OS.

Windows 8 is really shaping up to be the OS that pushes me full-time to Linux. With Steam moving to Linux and hopefully many new games as well, there is really nothing holding me back. Next PC I build could very well not include a Windows OS at all.

To be fair, Windows 8 hasn't had anything such as desktop support removed, so if MS does do something like locking Windows in the future, it wouldn't be Windows 8 that gets locked. We shouldn't bash Windows 8 for that (although there may be other reasons to complain).

I dont hate Windows 8. I actually like it a lot, overall, such as the faster boot times and whatnot. Im just apprehensive over whether or not future versions will start to become locked down more and more. So Im personally conflicted on it succeeding. And honestly, if Linux had better game support from companies, I would have ditched Windows a LONG time ago. Its the main reason for me using a computer. That and my overall hatred for the current gen consoles now a days.

[citation][nom]bigdragon[/nom]Why do you have to "certify" a program to run on Windows 8? That's just ridiculous. Minecraft runs on XP, Vista, 7, and all sorts of other non-Windows OS solutions. Why "certify" it for use on 8? This sort of terminology and behavior from Microsoft scares me. I don't want them locking down all program development on the PC. By trying to certify and act as a gatekeeper to determine who gets recognition in their promotional materials and online store tells me Microsoft wants to pick the winners and losers. They want to set up an iOS-like walled garden. It's very very disturbing. This behavior has the potential to be massively destructive to the indie game scene, open source software efforts, and PC industry as a whole.[/citation]Have you ever used an iOS or Android device? They already do all this same stuff you people are crying about. It's insane. Microsoft follows where the industry is headed and people wet themselves.

Would you consider Android anti-indie? No? Then you have nothing to fear from this. I mean shoot, XBLA has a good solid indie games program, and has for quite a while. They're not going to be locking people out. They just want to make sure that their user experience is at least as good as the competition, who already have similar App Stores as the primary source for software.

Windows 8 is just windows 7 with online capabilities. It's just like the same itunes that does their apps as well, except this is Microsoft. To those complaining about the new Metro interface, its just a place, you still have the same desktop (without the start button, replaced with an entire menu) and it runs the same things that windows 7 and its predecessors did. This is just for both Microsoft to make money as well and kind of help people to get into windows 8 a little bit more. Yes, it is good Notch or Markus had said no to Microsoft, because then he wouldn't make the profit for the pc base, but also think about it this way, windows tablets if they have keyboards of if you want to have the windows keyboard as a transparent keyboard onscreen, won't have that PC experience. For those wondering about the mouse, its just the screen, just move your finger left or right. To host LAN servers, just set up an AdHoc server. Windows 8 is just another windows, so to your Linux and Apple fanboys out there, just remember that windows still plays games, just a little differently and it might seem touch friendly, but hey, many people are not used to change.
