notebook processor upgrade

I have a Compaq Presario 1500 and I love it. But it's time to push the performance barrier a bit more. It's currently running a Pentium 4 1.6ghz (technically it's not a pentium-4m but a "desktop" pentium 4). I cracked the case and found a PGA478B socket with the processor in there.

I'm wondering what my CPU upgrade possibilities are? Any suggestions on where to buy a new mobile CPU? The faster the better...

Thanks,

ORON

p.s. I have photos of my system board if that helps...

Yep, you can run a newer faster processor. Be aware that you'll get increased battery life and reduced heat using a Mobile P4. I don't know what bus speeds your chipset supports but I'm fairly certain a mobile P4 2.4A exists.

I'd actually rather sacrifice battery life and heat for a faster processor as I use this laptop 90% of the time plugged in and running 3D CAD modeling software.

How do I find out what bus speeds my chipset supports (or, rather, how do I find out what my chipset is?). Also, can I plunk in any pentium 4, desktop or mobile?

Thanks,

Olen

It should run any P4 with a compatable bus speed. But I'm not familiar with Laptop chipsets, so unless your lappy is using a desktop chipset I'll be useless to you beyond that.

As for the heat issue, I'm not sure how much processor your laptop can cool, so that could be an issue, or it may not.

I *think* its an 845MP chipset (mobile pentium 4 chipset) but it's hard to find out exactly. Any ideas on how to figure that out? Is there some kind of diagnostic software or anything? Or anywhere i can look on the mobo to see?

Thanks,
