What I know is that both TSMC and GF said they will "drop" the 32nm node and move directly to the 28nm node. Judging from the problems TSMC had with the 40nm process that affected both ATI (now AMD) and nVidia at the time, I think 28nm should be at least one year away, so the end of 2011 2H. I think it will be more like the end of 2012 1H, but that's just me.

As for the roadmap above, please note the "768 core" designation... 768 CUDA cores on 40nm... that's not ONE chip, that's a CODENAME for a dual GPU card. It has to be. 768 CUDA cores on 40nm will be ONE FREAKIN' HUGE chip. About 50% larger then GF100. I can't even begin to comprehend how can such a beast exist. Imagine the cooler on these cards. Impossible. Not to mention the overly complicated 512bit memory bus. 512 is codename for 2x256... see how everything drops into place :)

Right, but the rumor that says 20% increase refers to the rumor of a 512-Cuda Core GF110.

In other words, its still TWO DIFFERENT rumors.

Like others have noted, I too struck the 32nm off the list as TSMC said they were skipping that step which leaves me with just the one rumour at the moment...hmm.

Except that Nvidia says 20%, which can already be done with two GTX 460's, which means they don't need to activate the rest of the GTX 460 core...

That's not what I want to hear! I've been holding out for the full monty 460's to replace my 8800's.

And YES, rumors of such a card actually PRECEDE rumors of the GTX 580! Hooorah!

Both rumors have merit. If GF110 is indeed the 512SP chip that the GTX480 should have been, then great. I would call that the GTX485, but then again I would call the dual GF104 the GTX495, as nVidia did in the past. Unfortunately the new and confusing naming scheme that AMD prepared with the 68x0 can indicate a new and confusing naming scheme for nVidia too.

A much improved GF100 Fermi chip (aka GF110) would have more merit on a technological aspect of things, a much more refined single GPU "king of the hill" card. The dual GF104 card would just be a "brute force attack" (pardon the pun) and they have the expertise to pull it off without much effort.

One is really hard to pull off (on 40nm), the other is really easy and has a larger performance potential. This month nVidia needs performance, next year maybe they could give us refinement.

But any way this goes, we will win in the end. We can see now with the 5970... it's expensive and it was really expensive. Everyone thinks AMD has the good prices and that AMD is the one that pressures nVidia into lowering theirs, but there are several points in time where it went the other way around, recently with the 68x0. We need both companies to have competing products in all the market segments, or the prices will stay at stratospheric levels where one card reins supreme.

something inside me says that i hope its a gtx 485 being a fully functional 512 part, since it was designed to be ran with 512sp could there be any inherint code balance performance to be gained alone more than simply just the difference between the 470 and 480?

If these pictures are correct then the rumours of the GTX580 being a dual GPU card can be put to rest.
