Fermi didn't disappoint like most people are saying it did...

The cards we got are crippled, a gtx 470 should have the specs of a gtx 480 and a 480 should have 32 more sps,

but even with this handicap, they still keep up with and beat AMDs cards consistently, which is impressive when you consider that the AMD cards have very mature drivers and the Nvidia cards were run on immature beta drivers.

If you look at the performance increases since the HD5 series launched, you can see that drivers can make a whole hell of a lot of difference.

Power consumption is the only real weakness and even then, a 480 uses slightly less power than last generation's (gtx 295) top end card.

I don't understand the issues with temperature, a 5870 idles at 55c and loads at 92c, according to Tom's, a GTX 480 idles at 57c and loads at 97c.
That really isn't much of a difference and the Fans were left on Auto, which is more of a "quiet mode" than an effective way to cool a card. Yes Fermi run hotter, but not by much.

thanks RADIO_ACTIVE!! i just scored 2 480's. i am so stoked! my quad sli 295's have not worked very well in 3d- fermi sli will be much better for my system! i hope all you ati boys enjoy your lame 2d gaming.... anyone who says 3d is a gimmick cant afford it and is in bitter denial- or has never tried 3d! 3d gaming is the cats meow! i refuse to play in 2d- 3d so much better. There are hundreds of games to play in 3d on nvidia hardware. i hope that some day you ati boys can enjoy 3d like i am on my 65" hd tv- but the only solution now for you is iz3d- and they have no dx10 or 11, no sli, no dlp projectors, no shutter glass... well you get the picture. the good news is they have some of these features in beta. ill be purchasing the iz3d driver whenever it can take advantage of my hardware- i want to support the competition! it will only make 3d better for everyone. Nvidia is way ahead in 3d gaming...

some of these ati fanboy posts crack me up! who cares what brand people run. everyone has different ideas of what is best for them. for me- i want the fastest setup that works in 3d with physX. if ati had that crown i would run them- but they dont. plus the bottom line for me is that the fermi sli is the performance leader even in 2d. i dont personally have to worry about the cost or the heat (i have a super high end case). shoot- even my old 295 quad sli setup ran into the 90c range running milkyway@home 24/7.

for other gamers- they are on a budget- cant afford the 3d investment and ati looks great to them. nothing wrong with that!

Regarding the CaptainBib poster who referred to 5870 temps vs. 480 temps.

My Sapphire 5870 idles at 30 Degrees C with room temp at 20 degrees C and fan speeds at 21% (aka silent).

Under a full FurMark load, with fans still only at 60%, temps max out at 76 degrees celcius, if I increase fan speed to max, temps peak at 63 deg.

Until I can see Fermi cards running that cool, I am still going to laugh at the temps they run at now. Not even to mention the 80+ more watts consumed.

These numbers were also during full prime95 load of my 130Watt processor under a Corsair H50/Scythe Ultra Kaze (@60% Fan Speed). Processor temps were 26 deg idle, 42 degrees full load.

Since Jan. 09, my graphics subsystem has changed from an 8800GTX (on AthlonX2), to a 4870 1GB(Core2Q), to a 4870/4850 CF(Core2Q), to SLI'ed GTX 260's(OC'ed i7 920), down to one 260(same 920, then Athlon 2 X4), then to a single 4890(A2X4), then back to the old trusty 8800GTX(A64X2), now to my new 5870(A64X2 6400+, soon to be either 930 or PII X6). I am not biased between brands I hope you can see.

I simply base my decisions on price/performance, and right now, ATI is rocking the Graphics field. If I am wrong tell me where there is competition at the $150-170, $300, and $400 price points.

To me, the thermal specs of Fermi are downright unacceptable. That is why ATI won me over this Gen.

I was not saying that Fermi blew away the HD5 series while running cooler and using less power, I was saying that Based on Tom's Chart:

http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/geforce-gtx-480,2585-15.html

The GTX 480 runs 2 degrees celsius warmer at idle and 5 degrees c warmer at full load. It is measurable, it is there, but it is not like Fermi is an order of magnitude hotter, which seems to be what some think.

Yes, it is power hungry, but no more power hungry than Nvidia's last flagship.

We all get that ATI has price/performance locked down, NO ***, that's what they always do. They also have performance per watt and mature drivers, but it's not like Nvidia came with a card significantly slower than ATI's offerings.

Also, if Nvidia had had its way, the 470 would perform like a 480 and the 480 would be closer to, although probably still much slower than, the 5970. It didn't happen this way, but it shows Fermi's potential if the fab yields are improved.

I am not a Fanboy, I bought 2 5870s for a secondary rig (one that doesn't need to run CUDA), but just because ATI came back from being the underdog doesn't mean they are invincible.

yes only 3d.... its that much better. i really hope ati gets 3d goings soon- i would love to build a machine on there hardware that would render 3d really well....but for now its only on the green team..

i dont have enough free time to play other systems. but the ps3 is supposed to have a 3d update soon. my pc kills all my free time. Pretty much any pc game can be run in 3d now. some are better than others. all the online games play just fine.. sometimes i play AvP 2010 multiplayer- but i work so much that i usually just play single player mode on games.
