got 6 more days for the amd press event which is supposed to have some info. all these unknowns and possibilities are a HUGE reason i'd wait a bit to see what happens. so many unknowns and so many good things that can happen for those who wait a bit and let the scene develop before diving in.

You think nVidia will let AMD get the upper hand for a while or ship the new GPU as soon as Vega becomes relevant?

Yeah, I'm kind of developing this attitude. I still hope Vega will push the 1080ti release to Q4-2016 or Q1-2017, though.

That's under the assumption AMD even can get the upper hand.

They're GPUs have been behind technology wise for a long time. They've just been pumping more power into older tech, that they have refined the use of for sure, but it's not really innovative.

i think it is the right choice for them to stay at the mid to lower level right now. if they can release a 480 with 980ti performance at less than $300 it would take the market by storm. it's nice to have the fastest card but they don't pay the bills like the mid range and lower cards do. we know the trickle down effect by being the king of the hill but i doubt people are that pig headed to ignore such a price/performance card.

a 1070 should be around this same performance and is slated to start at $479 for the founder's edition. that's a LARGE price difference for the same power. i'll take and be VERY happy with 980 ti power for under $300 and not worry one bit who's $1000 card can go the fastest.

i drive a ford but not because they have a supercar that looks cool and goes fast nor because they have a nascar team. my $35000 midsize is mine cause it was a great car for the money i spent!! 😀

The $550 7970 was the last time AMD had the upper hand for an extended period, which lasted three months (only speaking of recent generations). Since then, the 780 Ti came out two weeks after the 290x and reigned for ten months; followed by the 980 unrivaled for 8 months until the 980 Ti was released, two weeks before the 390x and three weeks before the FuryX. This, of course, lead to continued unrivaled dominance for one year... until next week when the 1080 is released. On each occasion, Nvidia had a response to every major release from AMD within 2-3 weeks, and the majority of the time was preemptive spoiling AMDs parade.

Based on that history, I would expect the GTX 1080 Ti to come out within three weeks either before or after AMDs top Vega card, most likely before Vega. Nvidia seems to like to hold their secret weapon in reserve and only release it as a means of undercutting AMDs bid for the top spot.

yah that does seem to be the case in recent history. nvidia has had the top card for good bit unless you count the 295x2 which is still a beast and topped everything nvidia had for a good bit.

amd has not been on top but they have screwed up pricing. recall the 970 prices before the 390 was released? that's what i am thinking is gonna happen again with the 480 when it hits. won't beat the 1070 but sure will kill the price of it when it forces nvidia to drop prices. this is a win for us for sure if amd pulls it off.

They're just slow. I feel like we've been waiting forever for Zen.

But let's not forget the mid segment. When the 960 was released, the 280X was better and cheaper.

for new. not too much however used keeps falling and i then it will continue till abit after the 1070 gets put out

I don't want to risk sounding like an nvidia fanboy here (I used an AMD 7770 to build a hackintosh for my mom)

But if AMD's mid range card in crossfire can't beat the 1080 I think AMD is gonna be in trouble financially. I'm of the opinion that SLI and Crossfire are being phased out, I have an SLI setup right now and if I could go back to when I built my computer I would have saved up a little more and just gone with one 780ti.... fewer and fewer titles are getting proper SLI and Crossfire profiles, and when I have to force alternate frame rendering it just uses my cards at half capacity instead of using one at full and I still get lens glaring and flicker, I'll maybe get a 5% boost in framerate and that's it. Titanfall, one of my favorite games, is a good example of this. Hell I own Doom 4 and haven't even played it yet because I'm waiting to get a 1080 so I can play it the way it's meant to be played

I'm just so hoping that either EVGA, MSI, or Gigabyte come out with a liquid cooled or hybrid version of the card by the end of June.

I also wish that the 1080/1070's lithography was 14nm FinFet as opposed to 16nm FinFet, I feel that that could have boosted performance even more for the 1080/1070

Yeah but that's just one benchmark, and we don't know what card it is yet. For all we know is can be the 470 and 470X, which would have surely incredible performance then.

One thing I can't wait to see is what AMD is going to do for the successor to their R9 Fury cards, if they boast HBM2 and the 980ti or Titan successor sticks with GDDR5X those are going to be some sweet cards. I'm kind of locked in with Nvidia though, having a G-sync monitor and all, but I've been thinking of waiting to see what the Fury successor will be like, because I do plan on getting a 1440p G-sync monitor (currently my monitor's native resolution is 1080p) to go with my 1080 as well, but if AMD comes out with something that can compete with the 1080ti (or whatever they'll call it), I'd gladly get a freesync monitor. Once you go G-sync or freesync, you never go back, ever. The only thing I know for sure at this point is I will never SLI or Crossfire again.

Their Titan successor is planned to use HBM I believe.

Hopefully, though I would also be happy if it still used GDDR5X as long as it has a 384 or 512 bit interface

Well I don't really see how they could switch up the design to look much different and be as efficient and efficacious....

AMD already has their target in terms of performance in the 1070 and 1080. It is a guarantee that they will offer a compelling product in terms of relative performance in the mid-price range.

The issue is, what do they need to do to hit that target? Will we see stock clock speeds pushed to their limits and cards that run in the 90c temperature range (like the 290x/390x)? Will we see cards that need reference designs that come with liquid cooling because the limits have been pushed beyond what conventional cooling can handle (like the FuryX)?

Or will Polaris actually be a marvel of engineering, capable of competing easily against a competitor who has outspent it several times over in research and development? It won't be long until we find out.

That new design is meh. They're older cards look better.
