I know you didn't have time to show overclocking benchmarks...what clocks can overclockers expect...I would like to see more precise details on the test systems. For example, you could have used a reference r9 290x in silent mode in your benchmarks which would mean you tested the r9 290x at more than 100MHz lower than its stock clocks. Also, the small print telling us you downclocked the gtx 980 sc to reference clocks is kind of easy to miss.

Thanks for the review!

I thought they were only expecting a small increase in performance! Thats quite a bit more increase in performance than I was expecting. Much better power consumption too. I typically prefer AMD cause there prices and great performance, but I must say I am impressed. I hope AMD is really got a good update planned otherwise they will need to rely heavily on price cuts to maintain sells.

Nice price to performance cards. I would be very iffy about sticking one into a mini-itx box where the psu wattage comes into play. The wattage spikes on these cards are pretty high. The resulting 'actual' power usage is higher than what Nvidia states and will spell murder for psu's running near those ratings.

"If you've skipped to the last page to see our conclusion..." LOL, that was me!

I'd love to see a comparison between the Titan Black and GTX 980 in both gaming and 3D rendering.

I think it's important for us all to remember how successful the R9 290 series was. The 290X was such an amazing value that its price hasn't dropped for nearly A YEAR. That is unheard of for a graphics card. Beating a 1-year old card by 10% a year after it came out isn't as a big a deal as most people seem to think it is.

Having said that, Maxwell IS impressive considering its power consumption. AMD is going to have to respond by year's end if they don't want to lose market share (Much the same as Nvidia had to a year ago 😉 ).

I can't quite justify a 970 right now, but I expect to be all over a 960- or 950-class card ($150-$200). I'm one of the few who does emphasize performance/watt, and these cards appear to be pretty amazing.
Actually, I might sell my Omega system, then buy a GTX970 for Phoenix; yeah, that's the ticket...

ok. Not an amd fanboy or nvidia for that matter. AMD has always won price performance, they are staggering way too far behind now.

Very impressed by these cards, i wasn't by the 750ti as people could actually get way better performance for less on an ok PSU. So if AMD does not step up before i choose to upgarde well then too bad.

Gj this time nvidia, the gods have descended and bestowed humility upon thy cards. Nice price range, they did learn something in the years.

Tom? I have a perplexing issue that's weighing on me about the new GTX 970 card versus the older GTX 770.

I recently purchased this card from New Egg. Its the 4GB version card. I looked over the specs and yes the 970 does look better and have better specs. But is it really worth me sending back my card for this newer card?

I have this card.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130925

Can anyone share any info about the comparison between these two cards please?

Yes it is. If you can get the rest of the money back ofc. If not Add some more and get the 980?

That is true, though to be fair at first the over-buying of these cards for use in crypto currency mining shot the price way higher than it should of been. Took about 6-months just to get to expected retail price.

Though the real winner here isn't Nvidia or AMD, its us. Till the AMD R9 300 cards come out, they will compete by having the OEMs drop the price on there existing products. Meaning the days of a sub-$200 AMD R9 280 are probably already here, AMD R9 280x are coming fast. Granted those cards are two years old now going by their architecture, but it still plays every game at 1080p maxed out settings so who cares?

I'd say give it a week. If you are after the best performance overall, AMD will probably drop the R9 280x low enough that it is the better buy. If not, then get the GTX 970 of course but there will be some response so its worth seeing.

Well, I think I know what my next upgrade is going to be! As soon as I can afford to snag a 970, it will be gracing the inside of my X79 rig!

Im going negative on this. Do not expect any more lowering from AMD, because they are not advancing at all recently these will probably see only a drop of 10-20 bucks no more in the next 2 months. But as you may see too, the op i curious about it, but the best course of action here if he can get a full return then invest in the 980 he should do it asap.

Stop comparing 2 giant companies with only 1 small one. letting aside my love for AMD you have to admit that this little company can put up a fight ... i was even impressed on hearing that AMD provided the SSD`s to NASA`s Mars rovers.

I don`t know about the 980 but the 970 sure is an impressive card for it`s price.

Return the card ASAP definitely, but you can already buy R9 280x cards for $240 as of today, I just checked on PCpartpicker. Granted that is $28% lower performance with more power consumption, but its also 28% lower than the suggested retail price, assuming that they manage to maintain the suggested retail price. (all compared tot he GTX 970)
Given a $20 price cut, the R9 280x would offer better performance/price ratio, assuming that is the lowest price cut they do. After he gets his money back, you really think its best to just buy the newest card without even considering the other offerings on the market?

The last time I owned an Nvidia gpu was over 10 years ago with the TNT. This card is amazing for its low tdp, low energy usage, and high efficiency. AMD better get its arse in gear and come out with a card that just as fast and just as efficient, otherwise I'm going over to the green team.

Very very impressive. Although I am also waiting on AMDs response because they often have a knack for taking what we thought was impressive value from nvidia, and making it look overpriced... Just look at the best GPUs for the money of the past few months.

These price drops are going to be great. I am still going to sit on my i5 2500k and CF 7950's but serious price drops have to be on there way. I picked up a new twin frzr 7950 (r9 280) just over a year ago for $205 from newegg (w/o MIR).

Are we going to see the r9 280/285 going for $180 and where is the 280x going to sit then, around $220 would be my best guess.

Impressive price to performance ratio on GTX 970, but this is expected from a newer generation card compared to last generation cards. I will wait to see what AMD has to offer, before I upgrade. I also expect a severe price cut in R9 290 and R9 290x pretty soon, or they will be eating dust in vendor warehouses.
