[citation][nom]hannibal[/nom]But it is coming... not like Larrabee that has been halted for some time... And yeah the situation is not easy to GTX400 series, but manageable. The rumour is that 400 series is for dx11 cards and 300 series for dx10.1 cards... who knows. We can just hope that we don't see 8800 renamed to GTX450 or something similar... GTX350 is guite possible though...[/citation]

It will become the GT340 or GT330... judging by the current pattern:

8800gts
overclock, change name to 9800GTX
overclock some more (die-shrink?) 9800GTX+
overclock a little bit again- GTS250

I'm completely fine with this strategy as long as they do a die-shrink every time they rename it. I can overclock it myself, but a new name (and higher price tag) would lead me to believe that it has also received some REAL upgrades (I bet that we will be seeing a g92b based GTS330 or 340 with GDDR5 on a 40nm process)

I really HATE nvidia's trend of skipping generations though. The 9000 cards were just overclocked and rebadged 8000 cards, so I don't consider it a real generation (Even the 9800gx2, I would refer to as an 8800GTSx2)
The 10000 series was skipped and nvidia switched to a new naming scheme that was only in the triple digits (2xx) except there they also skipped the 1XX series. Now they are skipping the 3XX series as well.

Since November 2006, Nvidia has released: g80, g92, g200
Since May 2007, ATI has released: R6XX, R6X5/R670 (3000 series), R700, and R800

Good. Now finally we may one day see the GeForce 666. My dark master calls...

All I know is that for all the hype Nvidia is pouring on, Fermi better be able to deliver World Peace in addition to high FPS.

hmm. If I ever had a GPU company, I would make the naming make sense. Like the first generation will be 1.xx, entry level is 1.0 (slowest) 1.5 (mid) 1.9 (max). so when a new chip comes along you just go to 2.xx (etc.) All the different decimal point derivatives will tell the consumer where the product sits in the chain of performance.

but i guess that is just to simple for the marketing 'geniuses'. They think when ever a new chip comes out that it has no relation to its predecessor. New chip = new naming system. "lets confuse the crap out of the consumer b/c when they are confused we can bait & switch"

If Fermi comes out of the gate and kicks ATI right in the sack, being priced higher then ATI will not matter. You are all fan boys and will flock to whatever is better at the time.

I bet few people here knew that there was a Geforce 100 series? They are OEM only cards with older gpu's. Nvidia is doing the same thing with the 300 series it looks like. It actually does make sense. They are trying not to associate Fermi with the older series 300 oem cards.

Crap on Nvidia when they come out with their stuff. If you don't like them, don't buy from them. I really want both ATI and Nvidia to do well. The prices right now are terrible. There is little competition for the 5XXX, and prices have mostly increased with old cards sticking around for way too long (ex: the 4850 is still around but for $20-30 more than before).

You might hate Barack Obama, but you really should want him to be the best president ever. It's in your best interest for him to succeed as well as both video card companies.

[citation][nom]saint19[/nom]Ohhh....few weeks to seee the fight start again. Let's see if nVida can defeat the ATI HD 5xxx series.[/citation]
They have always defeated ATI and that will not change.

Well, now it's not an ATi vs Nvidia thing. It's almost always been an unwritten rule that Nvidia=better framerates and ATi=better color. I used to be an Nvidia person (until the 9 series), then an ATi person (4k series-). Now, I can honestly care less. I can't wait until we see some numbers (price AND benchies) on these cards.

i think they skipped the 300 to let you know that the price is gonna be that big! they are telling you: you want a 400 series? well then thats like buying 2x 200 series.

[citation][nom]annisman[/nom]"Fun fact of the week: We have no idea when these cards will launch, also we hope you have invested in multiple power supplies to go along with your multiple new lcd displays for our proprietary Physx and 3D Vision technology!"^ fixed the link for you Tom's.[/citation]

fcking nerd. everyones complaining about when nvidia will launch their cards. its not like theyre forcing you to wait. idiot

nvidia's 200 series is way overpriced...and have gone up, from like $260aud to $300aud (gtx 260) in the past 2 months...when ati's 4870 was like $185, before they sold out

I will admit just as much exasperation as everyone else. Fermi's specs have been well-known publicly for what, half a year or so? Everyone's expectations are SET. Perhaps nVidia was mistaken, and thought that they could pull a fast one, and say, "WAIT! This wasn't what you were expecting!"

All this will cause is confusion and grumbling; I honestly can't think it will help them in the end... ESPECIALLY when coupled with how long they're taking to get this to the market; we STILL have no release date!

[citation][nom]edilee[/nom]They have always defeated ATI and that will not change.[/citation]
"always?" So I suppose that, say, when nVidia put out the GeForce 4 Ti, to face off against the Radeon 9700pro, that they defeated ATi then?

Or for the GeForce FX 5800 Ultra (the vacuum cleaner) against the Radeon 9800pro, that ATi was defeated once again? Or the FX 5950 Ultra vs. the 9800 XT, the GeForce 6800 Ultra vs. the X800XT, X850XT PE, and the GeForce 7900GTX vs. the X1900XTX? I presume ATi was defeated each and every time by a more powerful card that cost less?

(hint for everyone else before they go digging: in all of the above cases, the Radeon bested the GeForce across the board, and at worst cost the same, while in other cases, was up to $100US cheaper)

My 8800GT factory OC'd to 700Mhz with a nice Zalman cooler has served me well. I'm hoping that these 400 series cards rock......so I can buy a 5850 for $200.

[citation][nom]eyemaster[/nom]I don't think ATI will come up with a new chip within a year, not that I would mind. Their 5xxx series is a nice performer, but they should have gave it more muscle.[/citation]

Well that might be a good reason to have a 2nd version of the GPU by middle this year, don't you think?

[citation][nom]Euphoria_MK[/nom]Well they have a revision every six months or so... They did that with the 4xxx series when they released the 4890. They might as well do it... Lower the power requirements and increase the clock by a bit if they can. I'll be happy with just a lower power req. and less heat....[/citation]Actually the 5000 series already has amazingly low power and heat requirements for the performance they deliver. They have especially low power draw at idle!
[citation][nom]idisarmu[/nom]It will become the GT340 or GT330... judging by the current pattern:
8800gts
overclock, change name to 9800GTX
overclock some more (die-shrink?) 9800GTX+
overclock a little bit again- GTS250[/citation]Minor mistake - the GTS 250 is not an overclocked 9800GTX+. It is *identical* - same clocks and everything. Worse yet, the GT 240 performs worse than even an 8800GT/9800GT, and in reality the GT 240 performs closer to a 9600GT. It's hard to keep up with their marketing department!

If you look on Newegg now, you will find laptops already selling with GTS 350M and GTS 330M cards. Hence why they are skipping a generation. So maybe if you just buy the evenly numbered cards 200, 400, 600, you can avoid getting the confusing rebadged cards.

[citation][nom]idisarmu[/nom]... they also skipped the 1XX series. Now they are skipping the 3XX series as well.Since November 2006, Nvidia has released: g80, g92, g200Since May 2007, ATI has released: R6XX, R6X5/R670 (3000 series), R700, and R800[/citation]

I agree with most of what you said, except Nvidia DIDN't skip the 1xx series, they are reserved for Apple. Go price out a iMac and see the GeForce 1xx card listed as an option. I'm guessing they're gonna do that again.
