Do people really think AMD chips being in consoles is really going to amount to better performence out of AMD in the future? All of the sudden ATI drivers will roll out more frequently and be higher quality lol. The consoles are already outdated and they wont be released anytime soon... why do they even need to release consoles anymore?..now that everything will be x86..what games wont be available for pc? ..these consoles will be the last of their kind IMO

Nvidia may have been founded by former AMD people, but they've never been a cpu company.
Nvidia always has and always will be a gpu first company. They've never dabbled in X86 and probably never will since its insane to try and go up against AMD and Intel, after all it didn't work out too well for Cyrix. Plus AMD and Intel have a lot of freedom due to cross licenses, Nvidia would wind up paying royalties to both companies if they tried to make a X86 chip.
Nvidia had a sour taste in its mouth from the Xbox, where MS agreed to buy gpus at a certain price, then took Nvidia to court, which got kicked over to arbitration, to have their chip prices reduced. Nvidia agreed to see the original Xbox gpu at near cost at the start of the console's life with the understanding that later in the life of the console when MS was actually making a profit instead of breaking even they would make more as their process and cost of making said chips was reduced. Never happened, and Nvidia never made the big money MS promised.
Then there was the PS3...
Nothing more than a stripped down 7800 that offloaded the vertex duties and pixel shading to the cell cpu, which caused headaches for developers. Sony's idea, but Nvidia got a good chunk of blame. Again, not really worth it.
Consider desktops are a dwindling market.
Nvidia has thrown itself into the mobile market to make up for the drop in what was once their primary market. ARM licenses them a cpu for a song, and they use their own scaled back (waaaay back) gpu tech to make a soc for the exploding mobile phone and tablet market.
Profit!

AMD is in a much better position to design a more powerful chip for the desktop and consoles because of the Intel cross licenses, they do not have to pay a license fee to anyone, more profit. Plus its their own tech, and since they decided to move the memory controller onto the cpu (former north bridge chipset responsibility) its a major boost which allows them to use their Fusion tech to run a gpu and cpu on the same chip, both getting maximum bandwidth in the process.
Easy right?
AMD even sold out their soc division (that made the GameCube chips) to Qualcomm (which was originally owned by ATI). Grant it, that might have been a mistake to bail on an exploding market, but hey whats done is done.
AMD has been moving in this direction since the Athlon 64. They're better equipped for this market. The R&D has already been spent to push Fusion and its going to work better in a console than independent gpu/ cpu and bridged interfaces between them slowing down the process.
The fact that AMD already sunk a ton of their own money into developing this tech is a big plus to MS and Sony since its money they don't have to spend on R&D.

Each company picked a target market, both are where they want to be, and each is now better equipped for the markets of their choosing.
Best of luck to both of them.

Both xbox 720 and ps4 were "WIN" projects for AMD, I was there, at AMD at the time. Nvidia was also trying to get these WINs. Nvidia is now trying to save face, that's it, and undermine their competition. They can try to spin it every which way they want, but they know they lost this round. I doubt, both, Sony and Microsoft selected AMD's Graphics technology just based on cost.

AMD still has the advantage with Eyefinity in my experience and what I've read of others' experience lately. It's 3D Vision where Nvidia has the advantage here, granted IDK which company had a working 3D implementation of that sort first.

I think Nvidia should have made a deal with AMD to build CPUs and they could supply GPUs but then they'd have to split the profit. Good for AMD for taking this and running with it. The money coming from this should help AMD get back to it's feet and give us more bang for buck products.

Sony going with AMD chips on the PS4 is a very smart move. If Sony plays their cards right, I am looking about 5 years into the future: I see a successor to the VITA with an up to date APU architecture, that runs on low power, capable of playing every PS4 game that has been developed so far. And with digital downloads becoming standard, it is as simple as buying the next handheld, installing your gamertag, and simply download everything you have already purchased.

Reminds me, how USSR, that had it's on Moon project (N1 rocket), after failing to catch up with the US (besides sputnik/Gagarin thing, US was ahead all the time, well, von Braun branch of it, anyway) claimed that it never really intended to land on the moon and the main goal was a space station.

[citation][nom]mstngs351[/nom]It's cute that people choose to ignore that what nvidia says makes perfect sense. That and while having a combined CPU/GPU is a plus they didn't follow that structure with past consoles so don't pretend it's the end all/be all of reasons.[/citation]
APUs are simply PERFECT for consoles.
Intel is far behind.
nVidia isn't even present on this market. (yeah, including Tegra's with inflated number of cores)

What nVidia says makes no sense whatsoever.
They DO NOT HAVE A PRODUCT to even compete with AMD.

"Nvidia GRID for Internet-based cloud gaming and Nvidia Shield for local cloud gaming." good luck with that as for me you can take anything Cloud and keep it.

look for hand held tablets to be as powerful as a ps4/xbox720 in under two years.... consoles are dead, realize that, thats why neither microsoft or sony and investing too heavily in them. computers are the future, been saying that since the early 80's.

Mobile SoCs only very recently managed to match the current console generation in graphics performance with a few of the top models and at least in the case of Cell, if not for Xenon, the mobile SoCs still haven't caught up in CPU performance. The upcoming consoles will not be met in graphics performance for a very long time. I'd be surprised if it even happens within five years.

I'd also not even count the big ~10" tablets with the top end SoCs that can compete with current consoles as true "hand held tablets" due to their size. They're also far more expensive and far more limited in the main job of the consoles, gaming.

Sony and MS are putting a lot into their current consoles. What gave you the any idea otherwise?

NVIDIA ROCKS!!! Nvidia is on the right path, they could spend billions on a new desktop cpu, but they decided with mobile market cpu. Right choice! Intel is still king of CPU in terms of cost and performance. AMD? "MEH" They may have a good GPU, but unlike Nvidia, they don't do much in terms of anything else scientific or practical uses outside of gaming and mobile...

This really doesn't have any merrit. NVidia wouldn't have been able to offer an X86 APU and likely wouldn't want to work with IBM on a next gen Power7 /APU like architecture ... Nvidia is probably just pissed that SONY didn't want what they had to offer anymore.
It's an article best left unprinted.

PR spin for "We didn't get the contract but want our investors to believe it's because we didn't want to". Nice try Nvidia, not everyone buys crap like this.

Well, Nvidia need good ARM+GPU combination to compete in console wars (not yet there at this moment Next generation 64 bit AMR prosessors with next generation Nvidia mobile GPU... maybe). But I think that they are righ in there that the Console win does not bring so much money to the company. It is harder to say how mch it means as an image and development point of view, but at this moment Nvidia does not have a combination of CPU and GPU that can compete AMD at this moment. It can change of course!

Yeah, haha not sure if fanboy or *look at the guy's name*

mobile soc performance does grow rapidly as of late (thanks to the aggressive competition between soc maker) but it wont catch up to dekstop cpu/gpu that soon. in soc world faster performance is not everything. because they were made mainly for mobile device power consumption become a major focus when designing soc. hd7800 performance under 2-5w? will 22nm process node able to help soc to get that kind of performance? and that's not even counting dekstop like performance you're implying in to the equation.

Nvidia Y U So Butthurt?
I hope this means better performing 7xx Cards at the same price point not any of this 1,000$ Titan crap.

lol if you dont want another crap like titan you have to ask amd to come something better while costing much less. looking at what amd did last time i'm afraid if amd going to charge us more than a grand if they were able to come up with something that surpassing nvidia titan performance.

joking aside i heard some rumors about new direct x coming from microsoft when they rolled out windows blue and currently amd and nvidia are working their hardware for it. maybe that might the reason amd did not plan on new series this year.

Yeah, saw that too. Prefer to just ignore it...

This happens every time. The underdog makes a nice move then all of the smart people supporting the former lead know that this battle is lost and fall back while all of the retards stay thinking they're James Bond and start to make hits even tho they are clearly screwed but go ahead anyways. Then the inexperienced supporters of the conquering team clamming the ground see the stragglers and make a generalized opinion about the other team and start cheering and making fun of them. But thus every time the defeated will regroup and when the time is right and will attack, they might fall, they might succeed and take the ground, even another team might even come up to take ground. It's been in all of history and has happened thousands of times over and all of your stupid comments prove this.

I'm sure AMD is very happy to power the next generation consoles and do business with the Nintendo, Sony, and Microsoft. Nvidia FAIL..
