with a 30% coupon from the dell outlet, you can replicate every now and then. You can get the new also in the $6XX price range.

This doesn't go into the OPs mention of the problems with GTX 980 which better get fixed soon, but instead it puts some details into the *I can build it better for less*.

I think I can build it better. Yup.
I think I can build it for less. Yup.

I don't see how to build it better for less. There were / are frequent deals for xps 8700s for around $600 (core i7 ). I've not seen a parts list to do it cheaper.

So, for all those claiming to build it cheaper, here's your chance. Omit the PSU and graphics card since those are throw-away for anyone upgrading to a high end graphics card. Your budget is $600. Now please, build it better for less.

System must include windows 64 (7 or 8) and should include a keyboard and a mouse to be fair price wise.
the "crappy" Dell Mobo is Z87 chipset so it should be at least that with four DIMM slots.

core i7 4770 or 4790 / Z87 MoBo / 8 GB DDR3 1600 / 1TB 7200 RPM HDD / windows 7 or 8 / DVDRW / 2x USB 3 on the front (or top) 2x USB 2 on top (or front) with SD memory card slots, wifi (B-G-N)

here's my failed attempt to beat the price (along with my comments on why I picked that part)

CPU: Intel Core i7-4790 3.6GHz Quad-Core Processor ($289.99 @ Newegg) // cheaper today than a 4770
Motherboard: MSI Z87-G41 PC Mate ATX LGA1150 Motherboard ($79.99 @ Newegg) // cheapest Z87 or Z97
Memory: G.Skill Ripjaws X Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1600 Memory ($70.99 @ Newegg) // cheapest DDR3-1600 1.5V
Storage: Hitachi Ultrastar 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive ($42.99 @ Amazon) // cheapest 1TB 7200
Case: Rosewill Challenger-U3 ATX Mid Tower Case ($51.99 @ Amazon) // just a cheap case that will work. hard to find much cheaper
Optical Drive: Samsung SH-224DB/BEBE DVD/CD Writer ($14.99 @ Amazon) // cheapest DVDRW
Operating System: Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium SP1 (OEM) (64-bit) ($88.98 @ OutletPC) // cheapest listed
Total: $639.92 <------------------ but what? its more than $600

Adding Wifi, keyboard, mouse and an SD card reader.

CPU: Intel Core i7-4790 3.6GHz Quad-Core Processor ($289.99 @ Newegg)
Motherboard: MSI Z87-G41 PC Mate ATX LGA1150 Motherboard ($79.99 @ Newegg)

Mouse: Gear Head MP1600RU Wired Optical Mouse ($4.19 @ Mwave)

And, if the buyer isn't upgrading the GPU, then add a (crummy) GT 630 and a similar 460W PSU

What PSU did you use? I really want to upgrade mine but can't find the right one. I have bought to and both were missing a 4 pin power connector for the motherboard.

There is a BIOS update rolling out soon, according to the dell forum liason.

Dell has a new bios A10 that works with the GTX970-980 cards. I have one in my system now and it works fine with the stock PS too.

I agree with this statement, dell has a lot of crap components. Don't be fooled when they say things like i7 & i5. When my family got there first computer from dell that had an i5 in it it worked great for the time being. But on further inspection the i5 ran more like a Dou with hyperthreading. And with Dell's special pin setup it would have cost another $300 for another CPU that was just as much of a piece of crap. Everyone I talk to online, I suggest personally building a computer and I walk them through the building process and I help them pick out parts. Dell covers up there cheap parts (specialized parts) and try's to sell more parts in the post purchase as upgrades because your pretty much stuck with buying that particular pin type.

yeah I just install a gtx 970 gigabyte..first it works well but in the other games like world of tanks etc..it keep restarting my computer..

I replace the power supply twice also replace the video card twice ..but seems like same problem..

im going to buy new motherboard new cpu tower get the parts of xps 8700 put in new mobo and im going to throw this computer

one thing to look at is the amount of vbios releases giga. has put out for that card . why is that ? does the card have issues that there trying to resolve ?? I like this part of it '' 5.Improve compatibility with some monitors'' so it only works with some monitors out of its box ??

in the end I still feel as I did above and a new custom motherboard and all is your best move

I have had a Dell 8700 XPS for 2 years. I updated to the latest BIOS, slapped in my new 970 GTX reference card (has to be reference), and have been playing BF4 and every other game at Max settings without a single issue for the last 3 months. The card will run fine with the stock PSU and I have proved it! Just do not overclock and buy a reference card to keep within the power requirements.
