😀

Okay I have never experience the HDR+AA+AF since obviosly my Nvidia card (7800GTX SLI) does not run it. I've running it with Bloom+AA. How is HDR and Bloom differs?

For the ones that have an ATI X1800XT/X or X1900XT/X how good is it compare to just HDR? Is it worth having that quality and hows the performance at that settings.

Anyways I have read about a hack that enables Nvidia card to run Oblivion with HDR+AA+AF.

Finally how do you take screenshots on the game?

PC The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion

Thanks! 😀

hdr + 4xaa + ?xaf is pretty nice on a 360 + hd, so it would have to be pretty close on a 1900. 2 in xfire + 16*12 im sure would be the best.

With fraps you can make screens in game. Fraps is free www.fraps.com

And i think hdr is much better then bloom. it just gives the surroundings a much brighter view and such.

It's personal but i would put of AA and put on HDR. But i always prefer details for resolution. (its just that HDR dont run smoothly on my pc  )

But have you already tried hdr and just put AA off to just test it?

I'm running with a 1800xt 256mb and I have everything on max at 1280 x 1024 and hdr on, but you have talked of turning on anti laising with hdr on, how is this done?

Get the "chuck" patch from ATI to enable HDR&AA in Oblivion. (I find it better to google for the chuck patch than to search using ATI web search).

Added in Edit: After you get the patch, you need to set Oblivion for HDR and NO AA, and you need to set Catalyst for AA on instead of application control.

The difference between HDR and Bloom is a fair bit. HDR is actually fairly intelligent in the way it creates light and shine. Bloom just really makes the light bits more light and the dark bits have a light effect, it’s really that simple.

I my self don’t even use HDR or Bloom, first reason is because my X800 cant run HDR lol but the second is because the game looks just as good with out bloom to me. I turn off HDR and Bloom in every game that it is in since the effect it gives does not make up for the performance hit that it gives you.

I go for AA, HDR has always pissed me off too much. It doesn't look right the way things glow instead of giving off or reflecting light. Though with fire HDR does give it a more realistic effect to a degree more than AA and bloom.
oooo i like that sound of that patch 😀 will give it a go since I've got my 4200 to run at 2.65Ghz 8)

I really like hdr. If it is something like in far cry or HL2. With the iris effect wich i always like :)

So your able to use HDR with your x800gto? I didn't think they had the capability. If so, great. MY x850xt pe should be here Monday!! I am getting excited... I have been gaming on an ati 9200se, so this is a big step up for me.

Yeah it works in certain games 😀

Half Life 2, for example. This game does SM2 HDR. NFS most wanted has SM2 HDR too.

I hate to be the one to break the bad news to you but HDR will only work with SM3 cards. X800 series uses shader model SM2.

HDR - High Dynamic Range affects the overall brightness of a scene - if you're looking at dark stuff, stuff gets lighter and adjusts, if you're looking at bright stuff (like transitioning from dark to light...say the sun) it gets washed out and then your "virtual eyes" adjust and everything gets darker and more detailed.

Bloom - Is just the wash out bit (as described above) - bright lights sources blur around the edges of overlapping objects - or completely consume them if the object is small/thin enough. Bloom does the same big eye-candy thing that HDR does - look at the sun/bright light and see washed out stuff - however it does not actually change the overall brightness/detail level of other objects (like HDR) mimicking our eyes.

And...commence arguing.

My two cents:

First reference:

Half Life 2 - Lost Coast gives an excellent example of HDR, how it is done and done right. Download the level (if you have Steam + HL2) and turn on commentary by the developers. They will explain in more detail.

My thoughts:

HDR is sort of like Bloom, except it modifies color saturation as well as brightness. The effect is dynamic and it creates a richer image of colour vs. the bland pastels of textures that do not 'absorb' light correctly. A screen shot doesn't really do it justice, as you'll only see the effect when the objects are constantly moving. Not all games are done with HDR correctly, and it sometimes just look like Bloom anyway.

Bloom is more like the 'Diffuse Glow' distortion plugin in photoshop. It's a linear attempt at giving glows a softer feel for realism / effect but it's usually way overdone and I haven't seen a game that can turn it off dynamically.

I do find it redicolous that my laptop's X700 can run HDR all day without slowdown and my GF7950 is choking / not working with it at all on the same resolution. Though like I said, its only implemented properly on a few titles anyway. So no big loss for me.

In oblivion: I would go with the AA my self. from what i have seen both HDR and BLOOM suck .. and they suck hard core in this game. they both wash out the sky/ land scape to much and make the people glow. i would save the FPS and turn them off

I'm using Nvidia unfortunately it won't let me used both AA and HDR at the same time. I'm using the AA x4 and Bloom. I'll try FRAPS thanks.

😀
To see how it is, try a higher resolution and hdr. Higher res to make saw effect less noticeable.

I can promise you that you are in the minority on that one bud

I agree, my original statement still stands: HDR looks great when done *right*. Just like how there are some instances when Bloom will work great with a game. But I don't ever believe HDR can be worse than Bloom since it takes Bloom a step further.
